  1. 1989

The company collapsed after losses accumulated from underestimated Soviet projects, incorrectly calculated cruise-ship construction costs, expensive subcontracting, labour problems, and an inadequate liquidity position. The board declared immediate bankruptcy on 23 October 1989.

    Inherited contract and cost-estimation controversy

Projects inherited from Valmet were later found to carry substantial expected losses, while the costs of major cruise-ship contracts had also been underestimated. The episode became central to public criticism of the merger and the company’s financial controls.
