Overview

VTK (Военен телевизионен канал, Military Television Channel) is a Bulgarian television channel owned and operated by the Bulgarian Ministry of Defence. It began broadcasting on 7 January 2003 from Shumen with a four-hour daily schedule, and on 1 March 2004 moved its operations to Sofia and switched to a 24-hour programme. The channel changed its logo and graphic packaging on 25 May 2010. At its launch VTK had 27 original programmes and employed well-known journalists, directors and reporters, including Vladislav Prelezov, Pavel Donev, Mitko Dimitrov, Maria Racheva, Tsveta Kirilova, Spas Kyosev and Grigoriy Nedyalkov. Successful original titles included "Snayper" (Sniper), "Misiyite" (The Missions), "Shouto na Mamalev" (The Mamalev Show) hosted by Georgi Mamalev, and "Rock i hevi" (Rock and Heavy) with Toma Sprostranov. The channel broadcast a morning block, midday news and central news, and director Boyko Iliev contributed a historical segment. Its editorial priorities were the initiatives and development of the Bulgarian Army and the political leadership of the Ministry of Defence. VTK ran the largest campaign for the professionalization of the Bulgarian armed forces and covered with hot reports the participation of Bulgarian service members in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Reporters Evelina Branimirova and Desi Rangelova followed the lives and work of military professionals with VTK cameras, and there was hardly a unit where the military reporters left no trace. By April 2013 the only current programme on the air was the news bulletin; the rest of the schedule was filled with documentary and feature films and repeats of old programmes. The channel is associated with the website armymedia.bg and maintains an official YouTube channel.
