Overview

VS Vereinigte Spezialmöbelfabriken GmbH & Co. KG, commonly known as VS, is a German family-owned manufacturer of furniture and media systems for educational institutions, offices and object furnishing. Headquartered in Tauberbischofsheim in Baden-Württemberg, the company traces its origins to 1888, when the trade teacher Albert Ramminger became self-employed, and was formally constituted as Vereinigte Schulbankfabriken on 15 May 1898 through the merger of four school furniture makers, including Ramminger & Stetter of Tauberbischofsheim and P. Johannes Müller of (Berlin-)Charlottenburg. Production has remained in Tauberbischofsheim. VS describes itself as the "Ausstatter der Wissensgesellschaft" — the outfitter of the knowledge society — and builds not only furniture but learning and working environments that are inspiring, ergonomic and digitally networked. Its classic repertoire covers school tables and seating for pupils and teaching staff, formerly also desks and school benches, plus digital media. It also offers office furniture, furniture for living and lounge areas, furniture for all-day school operations, carcass furniture and small parts, as well as complete room partitioning and workplace design for companies. Since 1996 it has progressively developed a comprehensive office furniture range. The company works with internationally known designers and architects, among them Jean Nouvel, Martin Ballendat, Verner Panton, Egon Eiermann, Günter Behnisch, Stefan Behnisch, Hubertus Eilers and Peter Brown. Its 1950 wooden cantilever chair by Karl Nothhelfer, patented in 1952, sold more than 6.5 million units and equipped most West German classrooms between the 1950s and 2000s. In 2001 VS furnished the administrative workplaces of the new German Bundestag in Berlin. In 2012 it acquired the rights to the furniture designs of International Style architect Richard Neutra and brought them to market in 2013. VS remains in family ownership, now in its fourth generation. Roughly two-thirds of the workforce is employed in production at Tauberbischofsheim, where panel and steel-tube processing are anchored. Around 75 own specialist consultants and four German branches with planning offices and project managers provide local advice and planning. Subsidiaries include VS Service and VS Visuelle Medien in Tauberbischofsheim, VS America, Inc. in Charlotte, NC, and VS Furniture Australia in Moonee Ponds. The company opened a VS school museum in Tauberbischofsheim in 1998, moved its factory outlet to Werbach in 2019, and commissioned Werk 7.1 in the Schneekasten industrial area in January 2023.

History

The origins of VS lie in the entrepreneurial activity of Albert Ramminger (1851–1898), who had been a trade teacher in Tauberbischofsheim since 1876 and became self-employed in 1888. From 1890, the predecessor company Ramminger & Stetter manufactured the patented Columbus school bench in Tauberbischofsheim — robust furniture with cast-iron side parts and movable pendulum seats. The Columbus bench was awarded the Grand Gold Medal at the 1891 inventors' fair in Paris. VS itself was founded as Vereinigte Schulbankfabriken on 15 May 1898 through the merger of four school furniture manufacturers, among them Ramminger & Stetter of Tauberbischofsheim and P. Johannes Müller of (Berlin-)Charlottenburg, maker of the Rettig bench. The production site was Tauberbischofsheim. On the initiative of Paul Johannes Müller, from 1901 the range was extended to all products for school furnishing. In 1905 the company received a new name: Vereinigte Schulbankfabriken became Vereinigte Schulmöbelfabriken. From 1907 it collaborated with the Deutscher Werkbund, in particular with the architects Richard Riemerschmid and Bruno Paul. Before the outbreak of the First World War, VS employed about one hundred people in Tauberbischofsheim. As early as 1927, a statistic of the Association of German School Furniture and School Boards identified VS as the largest school furniture factory in Germany. In 1950 the architect and furniture designer Karl Nothhelfer (1900–1980) designed the wooden cantilever chair, which was patented in 1952. Between the 1950s and 1970s more than 6.5 million of these chairs were sold, and in most West German classrooms they were in use from the 1950s to the 2000s. In 1959, the characteristic shed-roof construction on part of the company complex and an administration building were built to designs by Karl Nothhelfer. At the end of the 1970s VS expanded its range and integrated additional production branches, reflected in the new name VS Vereinigte Spezialmöbelfabriken. From 1996 the company also progressively developed a comprehensive furniture range for office furnishing. In 1998 VS opened a VS school museum at Hochhäuser Straße 8 in Tauberbischofsheim with the permanent exhibition "Das Klassenzimmer. Schulmöbel vom Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts bis heute." In 2001 all administrative workplaces of the new German Bundestag in Berlin (Jakob-Kaiser-Haus and Paul-Löbe-Haus) were furnished with VS furniture. Since 2008 interactive whiteboards and touch displays have made interactive teaching possible. In 2012 VS acquired the rights to the furniture designs of International Style architect Richard Neutra and brought them to market in a collection in 2013. The A+D Architecture and Design Museum Los Angeles devoted a five-week exhibition to this furniture series, first issued by VS, in 2014. The Boomerang Chair from this series received a Special Mention at the German Design Award in 2015; the chair inspired the German sculptor Rolf Lieberknecht to create the installation Boomerang Tango. In 2015 a newly built assembly plant was occupied at the Tauberbischofsheim site. In 2019 the VS factory outlet moved into a former DIY store in Werbach. From 2020 the plant was expanded, and in January 2023 Werk 7.1 was commissioned in the Schneekasten industrial area.
