It was established in 1957 by a decision of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR as the publishing center of the Institute of Oriental Studies, initially under the name 'Publishing House of Oriental Literature' (Издательство восточной литературы). Over its history the house has issued approximately 8,000 titles, ranging from scholarly monographs and source editions to reference works and academic series. In 1964 it was merged into the Nauka publishing house as a division — the Main Editorial Board of Oriental Literature (ГРВЛ). Its list is closely tied to the academic series created by the Institute of Oriental Studies and the publishing house itself, including 'Studies in Folklore and Mythology of the East', 'History of Oriental Philology', 'Culture of the Peoples of the East', 'Monuments of the Written Language of the East' (published in 1959–1965 as 'Monuments of Literature of the Peoples of the East'), 'Ethnographic Library', and 'Languages of the Peoples of Asia and Africa'. As a state-owned academic publisher, it serves researchers, libraries, and universities in Russia and abroad, and remains an active imprint in the field of Eastern and African humanities.
