Overview

Vorwerk is a German family-owned corporate group founded in 1883 in Wuppertal. Its origins were in the manufacture of carpets, upholstery fabrics and the machinery used to produce them, but the company gradually evolved into a diversified industrial and consumer-products business. Today, the Vorwerk name is most strongly associated with two premium household-product ecosystems: Thermomix, a connected kitchen appliance and culinary platform, and Kobold, a range of vacuum cleaners, floor-care systems and related accessories. The company’s most distinctive commercial feature is its direct-sales model. Rather than relying primarily on conventional retail distribution, Vorwerk has historically sold its flagship products through independent or affiliated advisors who demonstrate appliances in customers’ homes and increasingly through digitally supported consultations, events and online channels. This model became central to the company’s transformation in the 1930s, when the newly developed Kobold upright vacuum cleaner initially struggled in retail. Personal demonstrations helped communicate the product’s technical advantages and created a repeatable sales system that Vorwerk later exported internationally. In the twenty-first century, the company has combined this relationship-based approach with flagship stores, online ordering, customer communities and digital ecosystems such as Cookidoo, the recipe and content platform associated with Thermomix. Thermomix is Vorwerk’s culinary business and has become the group’s principal consumer growth engine. The product combines functions such as weighing, blending, chopping, heating, steaming and guided cooking in a single appliance. Its development began with the VM2000 in 1971, described by Vorwerk as the first appliance in its heat-mixer lineage. Later generations introduced integrated weighing, steaming, digital recipe guidance, connected content and expanded software capabilities. The TM5, launched in 2014, marked a major transition toward a digital product ecosystem, while the TM6 broadened the appliance’s cooking modes and connectivity. In 2025, Vorwerk launched the black Thermomix TM7, presenting it as a new generation with a redesigned user experience and continued integration with the company’s recipe and advisor network. Kobold remains Vorwerk’s cleaning business. Its portfolio has developed from the original corded upright vacuum into modular cleaning systems that can address carpets, hard floors, upholstery and wet-cleaning tasks. Models and accessories have included upright vacuum cleaners, battery-powered systems, floor-cleaning attachments, filtration products and robot vacuums. Kobold is marketed in some countries under the Folletto name. Vorwerk also owned Neato Robotics, a United States-based robot-vacuum company, from 2017 until Neato ceased operations in 2023. Vorwerk later announced an early wind-down of Neato’s cloud services in 2025, generating criticism from owners of connected devices. Beyond its two consumer divisions, the Vorwerk Group includes akf bank, a financing business founded in 1968; Vorwerk Ventures, the group’s investment arm; and Nexaro, a Wuppertal-based technology company focused on autonomous robotic cleaning solutions for commercial environments. The group also previously operated businesses in data services, facility services, flooring and cosmetics. Major portfolio changes included the acquisition of Jafra Cosmetics in 2004, the sale of Jafra to Betterware in 2022, the separation of the Flooring division through a management buy-out in 2020 and the sale of the ZEDA data-services business to T-Systems in 2003. Vorwerk remains headquartered in Wuppertal and operates through companies, sales organizations and distribution partners across more than 60 countries. It is privately held and organized as a family-owned limited partnership. The company reported approximately 9,307 employees and revenue of approximately EUR 3.2 billion for 2024. Its…

History

Vorwerk began in 1883 when Carl and Adolf Vorwerk established the Barmer Teppichfabrik Vorwerk & Co. in Wuppertal. The company initially manufactured high-quality carpets and upholstery fabrics. It also produced the looms needed for its manufacturing process, first under license from an English patent and later using improved proprietary technology. The brothers separated soon after the company was founded, leaving Carl Vorwerk to continue operating the business. A succession crisis followed the death of Carl Vorwerk’s son, Carl junior, who had briefly taken over management. When the founder died in 1907, his son-in-law August Mittelsten Scheid became sole managing partner. Under his leadership, Vorwerk expanded beyond textiles. The company developed machinery, gears, transmissions, laundry and dyeing equipment, and electric motors. These activities helped create the industrial capabilities that later supported the company’s household-appliance businesses. Vorwerk’s decisive transformation began in the 1920s. The rapid adoption of radio reduced demand for gramophones, creating a serious problem for companies connected to gramophone manufacturing. Vorwerk engineer Engelbert Gorissen adapted a gramophone motor into a compact, high-performance upright vacuum cleaner. The resulting Kobold Model 30 received a patent in 1930. Retail sales were initially weak because customers were unfamiliar with the product and its benefits. Werner Mittelsten Scheid, a member of the owning family, responded by introducing a systematic direct-sales approach based on personal demonstrations in customers’ homes. The model proved successful and became one of the defining characteristics of Vorwerk’s business. By 1935, 100,000 Kobold units had reportedly been sold, and the product later reached sales milestones of 500,000 and one million units. Vorwerk began internationalizing the Kobold system before the Second World War. In 1938, it established an Italian sales organization that later became associated with the Folletto name. During the war, Vorwerk produced goods classified as important to the German war effort, while forced laborers were also employed in the company’s operations. The company has subsequently commissioned or supported historical work examining this part of its past and participated in the German industry’s compensation initiative for victims of Nazi forced labor. The company’s facilities, particularly the main plant in Wuppertal-Barmen, suffered severe damage during the Allied bombing of May 1943. Management passed jointly to Werner and Erich Mittelsten Scheid. Vorwerk’s sales organization helped sustain the business during the difficult wartime period by selling different products, although its normal operations were interrupted. After 1945, production and sales were rebuilt first in Germany and then in other European and overseas markets. By 1955, approximately 2,000 sales representatives were again active. Following Werner’s death in 1953, Erich Mittelsten Scheid became the sole managing partner. Vorwerk broadened its household range in the postwar decades. Refrigerators, washing machines, spin dryers and carpet brushes were added during the 1950s, although vacuum cleaners, carpets and upholstery fabrics remained central through the 1960s. In 1969, Jörg Mittelsten Scheid succeeded his uncle as head of the family business. Three years later, Günter Busch and Bernd Balders became the first managing partners from outside the founding family, signaling a gradual professionalization of management while family ownership continued. Diversification accelerated from the late 1960s onward. Vorwerk co-founded akf bank in 1968, establishing a financial-services activity focused on financing for medium-sized companies and other customers. In 1970, its internal data-processing capability developed into ZEDA Gesellschaft für Datenverarbeitung und EDV-Beratung. In 1974, the company founded Hygienic Service Gebäudereinigung und Umweltpflege, which became associated with the Hectas facility-services business. The most important consumer-product milestone came in 1971 with the launch of the VM2000, the first Vorwerk heat mixer. It combined food preparation and heating and established the product concept that developed into Thermomix, known as Bimby in some markets. Vorwerk also entered the fitted-kitchen business in 1974. Thermomix subsequently evolved through successive generations, including the TM3300, TM21, TM31, TM5, TM6 and TM7. The TM21 added an integrated scale and Varoma steaming system, while the TM5 introduced a digital interface and helped establish a connected content ecosystem. Cook-Key and Cookidoo later linked recipes, user accounts and appliance functionality, turning Thermomix from a standalone appliance into a broader culinary platform. At the start of the twenty-first century, Vorwerk pursued acquisitions and restructuring. It purchased the Lux Asia Pacific direct-sales organization from Electrolux in 2001, launched the Feelina ironing system in 2002 and sold ZEDA to T-Systems in 2003. In 2004, the group acquired Jafra Cosmetics, adding a major international cosmetics direct-selling business. Jörg Mittelsten Scheid left the board at the end of 2005. Vorwerk modernized its distribution strategy during the 2010s. It opened a flagship store in Hamburg in December 2011, expanded the concept to other locations and introduced an online store. Kobold sales territories were reorganized around fixed areas rather than the previous rotation system. Thermomix became the group’s larger consumer division by sales in 2014. In 2017, Vorwerk acquired Neato Robotics to strengthen its position in robot vacuums and connected cleaning products. The following decade brought further portfolio concentration. In 2020, the Flooring division was separated through a management buy-out. In 2021, the legal name changed from Vorwerk & Co. KG to Vorwerk SE & Co. KG. In 2022, Vorwerk sold Jafra Cosmetics to Betterware for approximately USD 255 million. Neato Robotics ceased operations in 2023, although Vorwerk initially continued its cloud platform and related support. In 2025, Vorwerk announced that Neato cloud services would be phased out earlier than some customers had expected, provoking criticism because connected functions of many robots relied on those services. Vorwerk’s current structure is centered on Thermomix, Kobold, akf bank, Vorwerk Ventures and Nexaro. The company remains family-owned, headquartered in Wuppertal and active in more than 60 countries through sales companies and distribution partners. Its stated Strategy 2030 seeks to make Vorwerk the world’s most attractive direct-selling company by combining personal advice with digital tools, product ecosystems, international expansion and continued innovation.
