Overview

Vormann Brauerei is a small, family-owned brewery based in Hagen-Dahl, Germany, with a brewing tradition dating back to 1877. Founded by Eduard Vormann, who leased the Friedrich Funksche Brauerei in Dahl on 1 October 1877, the brewery has remained in the Vormann family for five generations. Its slogan, "Die kleine Brauerei mit der großen Tradition" ("The small brewery with the great tradition"), reflects its dual commitment to heritage and quality. The brewery produces a range of beers including Pils, Altbier, and specialty beers such as the award-winning "Sauerländer Weizenbier" and "Dahler Urbräu." It also contract-brews and bottles beers for other small breweries, including FritzAle, Kehrwieder, and Gruthaus Brauerei. Vormann Brauerei is a member of Brauring, a cooperative society of private breweries from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and is part of the Route der Industriekultur (Industrial Heritage Trail). The brewery operates a farm shop and a small beer garden at its site on Dahler Straße 61, and its beers are available nationwide through the Bierothek online marketplace.

History

The history of Vormann Brauerei begins with Eduard Vormann, born on 12 July 1850. The Vormann family had previously produced teachers, but after the death of his father Gottlieb in 1856, the family could not afford to send Eduard to continue that path. Instead, he apprenticed at the Schwerter Brauerei Ostermann to become a brewer. After spending several years at the Löwen-Brauerei in Dortmund, Eduard sought to build something of his own. On 1 October 1877, he leased the Friedrich Funksche Brauerei with its attached inn in Dahl. The Funksche brewery, documented since 1718, had no cooled, ground-level beer cellar and could only produce top-fermented beers. Eduard, however, wanted to brew bottom-fermented beers, which required cooling. In 1882, the brewery tap moved to Dahler Straße 61, with the brewery located directly behind it. In 1888, Eduard Vormann purchased the brewery property and had fermentation, storage, and ice cellars built (Haus Eiskeller 9). After 1896, the brewhouse, a machine house for a steam engine to produce ice, and other facilities for ice production were added. A barrel filling plant was built to the right of the brewhouse, and a half-timbered building for storing coal for the steam engine was built to the left; that building now houses the wort cooler. The tallest building, the malt floor, dates from 1952, and a fourth fermentation cellar was built in 1954. Today, the brewery produces Pils, Altbier, and various beer specialties, including the award-winning "Sauerländer Weizenbier" and "Dahler Urbräu." It has also brewed and bottled successful beers for smaller breweries, such as IPAs and other beers of the FritzAle brand, the Prototyp of the Kehrwieder creative brewery from Hamburg, and the Pumpernickel-Porter of the Gruthaus Brauerei from Münster. The brewery is a member of Brauring, a cooperative society of private breweries from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and is part of the Route der Industriekultur.
