History
Volvo Penta’s origins reach back to 1868, when engineer Johan George Grönvall established a mechanical workshop and foundry in Skövde, Sweden. The enterprise later became a limited company known as Sköfde Gjuteri och Mekaniska Verkstad. Its early output included household metal goods, stoves, brewery equipment, agricultural machinery, and sawmill equipment. During its expansion in the early twentieth century, it added steam engines and water turbines for hydraulic-power installations. A major transition began in 1907 through cooperation with Stockholm-based engineer Fritz Egnell. The partners developed a one-cylinder, three-horsepower compression-ignition engine designated B1.
