Overview
Volontari per lo Sviluppo (VpS) is an Italian monthly magazine and multimedia platform dedicated to international cooperation, sustainable lifestyles, North-South relations, alternative finance, responsible tourism, development education and migration dynamics. It is published by a consortium of Italian NGOs and describes itself as "the magazine of those who inhabit the world." Its editorial mission is to inform the general public about the countries of the Global South, volunteering and international cooperation, moving beyond a specialist readership. The publication was founded in 1983 on the initiative of the Turin-based NGO Comunità Impegno Servizio Volontariato (CISV). It began as a magazine and a series of monographic notebooks, and from the outset it developed a consortium and joint editorial activity with other Turin NGOs in order to produce broad information about the NGO world. In 2001 it underwent a significant evolution: the editorial group opened up to the federation "Volontari nel mondo - FOCSIV," which today brings together 64 Italian NGOs; the editorial line was revised to reach a wider public rather than only insiders; and the graphic design was restyled. Today VpS is a monthly magazine, a multimedia website (www.volontariperlosviluppo.it) and a centre for developing projects that support the dissemination of information about the countries of the Global South, volunteering and international cooperation to the general public. The editorial committee currently consists of around twenty NGOs plus the FOCSIV federation. The editorial staff, a small permanent core, is based in Turin, while contributors are distributed across various Italian regions and the five continents. A central feature of VpS is its network of journalists from the Global South. The website and magazine translate articles by a network of African, South American, Asian and Eastern European professionals, with the aim of supporting free journalism in the South, where it is often still embryonic and obstructed by authoritarian regimes that control the media. In this context the magazine also carries out projects supporting African media and has promoted twinning between Italian and Sahelian radio stations and newspapers. In synergy with the Piedmont Region, it realized a twinning between around ten Piedmontese and Sahelian media, involving the transfer of media technologies to the countries concerned, Italy-Africa training and exchange missions, training modules for Italian and African schools on journalism and communication, and major international seminars. The network of Southern journalists linked to VpS currently includes around fifteen regular contributors in Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Kenya, Congo, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Chile, Peru, Argentina and Romania. The magazine is structured around investigations and articles on cooperation, international volunteering, the multi-ethnic society and North-South relations in general, plus a set of regular service columns for readers. These include @Volontari (letters from volunteers serving in various countries), Primo piano (current international affairs), Voci dal Sud (articles from the Southern journalists' network), Cooperazione (investigations into the cooperation world and NGO activities), Percorsi pionieri (innovative experiences of sustainability), Percorsi meticci (the multi-ethnic society and anthropological pieces), Percorsi creativi (socially relevant arts and literature), Percorsi di ricerca (scientific investigations on social, economic, political and environmental themes), Percorsi educativi (education for global citizenship in family and school), and Il personaggio (profiles of significant figures). Service columns include Mondo News, Da non perdere, Attivati, A.A.A. Volontari cercasi, Altroturismo, Il mondo in pellicola and Cose buone dal mondo.
History
Volontari per lo Sviluppo was born in 1983 from an idea of the Turin-based NGO Comunità Impegno Servizio Volontariato (CISV). It took concrete form first as a magazine and a series of monographic notebooks, and immediately launched a consortium and joint editorial activity with other Turin NGOs, with the aim of producing broad information about the NGO world. In 2001 the project underwent an important evolution. The editorial group opened up to the federation "Volontari nel mondo - FOCSIV," which today brings together 64 Italian NGOs. Alongside this opening, the editorial line was revised to reach the general public rather than speaking only to insiders, and the graphic design was restyled. Today Volontari per lo Sviluppo is a monthly magazine, a multimedia website (www.volontariperlosviluppo.it) and a centre for developing projects that support the dissemination of information about the countries of the Global South, volunteering and international cooperation to the general public. The editorial committee currently consists of around twenty NGOs plus the FOCSIV federation. The editorial staff, a small permanent core, has its central office in Turin, while contributors are distributed across various Italian regions and the five continents. A defining element of VpS's history is the creation of a network of journalists from the Global South, in which "Africans speak about Africa and Latin Americans speak about Latin America," with a watchful eye on sustaining freedom of information in the various countries. The website and magazine translate articles by a network of African, South American, Asian and Eastern European professionals, with the aim of supporting free journalism in the South, where in many countries it is still embryonic and obstructed by authoritarian regimes that control the media. In this sense the magazine also carries out projects supporting African media and has promoted twinning between Italian and Sahelian radio stations and newspapers. In particular, in synergy with the Piedmont Region, a twinning was realized between around ten Piedmontese and Sahelian media, with the transfer of media technologies to the countries involved, Italy-Africa training and exchange missions, the activation of training modules for Italian and African schools on journalism and communication, and the holding of important international seminars. The network of Southern journalists linked to VpS currently numbers around fifteen regular contributors, in Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Kenya, Congo, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Chile, Peru, Argentina and Romania.
