Volkswohl Bund

VOLKSWOHL BUND is a German insurance group headquartered in Dortmund. It is a Versicherungsverein auf Gegenseitigkeit (mutual insurance association) with no shareholders, and it states that it passes on nearly all generated earnings to its insured community. The group comprises VOLKSWOHL BUND Lebensversicherung a.G., VOLKSWOHL BUND Sachversicherung AG, Dortmunder Lebensversicherung AG and prokundo GmbH. It provides insurance protection for private households and the commercial mid-market, and operates as a broker insurer (Maklerversicherer) whose life and non-life policies can be taken out via brokers, multi-agents and independent financial service providers. According to its own statements, around two million people across Germany are insured with it.

The history of the VOLKSWOHL BUND insurance companies began in Berlin. There, on the initiative of the insurance merchant Max Helbig, eight women and men founded the non-profit association 'Deutscher Volkswohl-Bund in Berlin' on 28 January 1919. The association was intended to support its members in times of need and to cover funeral costs in the event of a death. Initially people worked for the VOLKSWOHL BUND on a voluntary basis, but soon there were permanently employed staff and the VOLKSWOHL BUND developed into an insurance company. From 1924 the first main administrative offices outside Berlin were established, including in Breslau, Königsberg, Hannover and Dortmund. After the destruction of the Berlin administrative building in the Second World War, the loss of large insurance portfolios in East Germany and the division of Berlin, the then West Zone head office in Dortmund gradually developed into the centre of the VOLKSWOHL BUND insurance companies. Today Dortmund is the company headquarters of all VOLKSWOHL BUND companies. On 8 July 1969 the VOLKSWOHL BUND founded VOLKSWOHL BUND Sachversicherung AG, extending its offering to liability, accident, motor and property insurance. In 2012 the broker portal 'prokundo' went online, and in 2017 Dortmunder Lebensversicherung AG was founded. Today the VOLKSWOHL BUND has annual premium income of almost 1.7 billion euros.
