Overview
Volkswagen Versicherungsdienst GmbH (VVD) is a German insurance broker and a wholly owned subsidiary of Volkswagen Financial Services AG. Founded in February 1948 by insurance broker Heinrich Kurig on behalf of Volkswagenwerk GmbH, it was established because the carmaker was legally barred from owning an insurance company. VVD's core business is the brokerage of motor vehicle insurance policies and claims support for customers of the Volkswagen Group's brands. It is the largest car insurance intermediary in Germany, and in 2011 it arranged policies for 13.1% of new Volkswagen Group vehicles sold. The company operates through Volkswagen dealerships and offers products such as third-party liability, comprehensive and partial comprehensive cover, breakdown assistance, extended warranty insurance, and payment protection. It also provides bundled packages like Prämie light, which combines vehicle financing or leasing with insurance. VVD is headquartered in Wolfsburg and has had international branches since 1949, starting with Austria, followed by the Netherlands, Italy, the United Kingdom, France, and Switzerland. In other European markets, insurance is offered through Volkswagen Financial Services AG subsidiaries or branches. The insurance business for other Volkswagen Group brands is handled by dedicated branches: Audi VersicherungsService, Seat VersicherungsService, Škoda Auto VersicherungsService, and AutoEuropa VersicherungsService. VVD's history includes milestones such as issuing its 100,000th contract in 1955, its 500,000th policy in 1961, and its one-millionth contract in 1965. In 1995 it was taken over by Volkswagen Financial Services AG, and since 1999 it has been a 100% subsidiary of that company. As of the end of 2012, VVD managed 3.1 million insurance brokerage and service contracts, with 1.06 million new contracts that year.
History
Volkswagen Versicherungsdienst GmbH (VVD) was founded in February 1948 by insurance broker Heinrich Kurig on behalf of Volkswagenwerk GmbH. The company was entered in the commercial register on 28 February 1948 and is based in Wolfsburg. Its purpose was to broker motor vehicle insurance and assist customers with claims, as Volkswagenwerk GmbH was legally prohibited from establishing its own insurance company. The need for such a service arose from the German law of 7 November 1939 that introduced compulsory motor vehicle liability insurance. In 1949, the first foreign subsidiary was established in Austria. Over the following decades, VVD expanded into the Netherlands, Italy, the United Kingdom, France, and Switzerland. In markets where VVD does not have its own companies, insurance is offered through subsidiaries or branches of Volkswagen Financial Services AG. In 1955, when the one-millionth Volkswagen rolled off the production line, VVD issued its 100,000th contract. In 1961, it produced its 500,000th policy, and in 1965 it concluded its one-millionth contract. At the beginning of 1970, the company moved from an office building at the Mittellandkanal plant to the newly built Burgwall-Center in the Rabenberg district of Wolfsburg. In July 1984, after a severe hailstorm in Bavaria caused extensive damage in Munich, VVD rented a sports field and invited customers to present their damaged vehicles there; within days, 5,000 claims were processed. In 1986, the Service-Karte was introduced, identifying customers to Volkswagen operations and simplifying insurance procedures. After German reunification, all citizens of the former East Germany had to obtain new motor insurance by 1 January 1991; by early September 1991, insurance policies for new and used cars for third-party liability had risen by 93.4%. In 1995, VVD was taken over by Volkswagen Financial Services AG, and since 1999 it has been a 100% subsidiary of that company. As of 31 December 2012, the portfolio of insurance brokerage and service contracts had grown to 3.1 million (2011: 2.6 million), with 1.06 million new contracts (2011: 0.91 million).
