Overview
Volksbank Bassum - Stuhr - Syke - Weyhe was a German cooperative bank (Volksbank) headquartered in Syke, Lower Saxony, with its administrative seat in Bassum. It was created in 1993 through the merger of three local cooperative institutions: Volksbank Bassum eG, Volksbank Stuhr eG and Volksbank eG Syke. The Syke institution was the absorbing bank and gave the merged entity its name. The bank operated as a universal bank within the Genossenschaftliche FinanzGruppe Volksbanken Raiffeisenbanken, the cooperative banking network in Germany, and served retail and small-business customers in the northern part of Landkreis Diepholz, southern Bremen and western Landkreis Verden. The bank's business area covered towns and villages including Syke, Bassum, Barrien, Brinkum, Groß Mackenstedt, Kirchweyhe, Stuhr, Varrel, Riede, Seckenhausen, Sudweyhe, Leeste and Arsten. It maintained a network of branches and self-service outlets, and its subsidiary VOBA Immobilien GmbH, founded in 1992, handled land development, real estate brokerage and related services. As a cooperative, the bank was owned by its members and governed by a board of directors (Vorstand), a supervisory board (Aufsichtsrat) and a members' representative assembly (Vertreterversammlung). It was affiliated with the official protection scheme of the Bundesverband der Deutschen Volksbanken und Raiffeisenbanken (BVR). In 2024 the bank merged with Volksbank Niedersachsen-Mitte eG, whose legal seat is in Hoya. Following the merger, the Volksbank Bassum - Stuhr - Syke - Weyhe brand ceased to exist as an independent institution, and its business was integrated into the larger regional cooperative bank. The predecessor institutions had a long history dating back to 1896, when the Spar- und Darlehenskasse in Stuhr was founded. Over the decades, numerous local savings and loan associations merged into the three main predecessor banks, reflecting the consolidation trend in the German cooperative banking sector.
History
The history of Volksbank Bassum - Stuhr - Syke - Weyhe is a story of consolidation among local cooperative banks in Lower Saxony. Its oldest predecessor, the Spar- und Darlehenskasse e.G.m.b.H. in Stuhr, was founded on 19 April 1896. After several name changes, it became Volksbank Stuhr eG and merged with Volksbank Seckenhausen e.G. (based in Seckenhausen) in 1975. In Bassum, the Gewerbebank was founded in 1913 and renamed Spar- und Darlehenskasse Bassum eGmuH in 1932. It merged with Spar- und Darlehnskasse Nordwohlde eGmbH (based in Nordwohlde) in 1967 and with Spar- und Darlehnskasse Neuenkirchen eGmbH (based in Neuenkirchen) in 1969. In 1974 it changed its name to Volksbank Bassum eG and merged with Volksbank Neubruchhausen eG (based in Neubruchhausen) in 1986. The Genossenschaftsbank Syke was founded in 1927. It absorbed several older regional banks: Spar- und Darlehenskasse Heiligenfelde eGmbH (1968), Spar- und Darlehnskasse Sudweyhe eGmbH (1969), Spar- und Darlehnskasse Riede eGmbH (1970) and Spar- und Darlehnskasse Barrien eGmbH (1971). After the last merger in 1971, it was renamed Volksbank eGmbH Syke. In 1993, the three banks — Volksbank Bassum eG, Volksbank Stuhr eG and Volksbank eG Syke — merged to form Volksbank eG, with its seat in Syke and administrative seat in Bassum. The Syke institution was the absorbing bank and gave the merged entity its name. The bank operated as a universal bank within the Genossenschaftliche FinanzGruppe Volksbanken Raiffeisenbanken, cooperating with DZ Bank, R+V Versicherung, DZ Privatbank, Bausparkasse Schwäbisch Hall, Teambank, VR Smart Finanz, DZ Hyp and Union Investment. In 1992, the subsidiary VOBA Immobilien GmbH was founded to handle land development, real estate brokerage and related services. In 1998, the bank acquired a listed building complex in Bassum that had formerly housed a district court and a prison. After renovation and extension, the building was occupied in April 2001; it preserved the historic structure while adding modern banking facilities, and visitors can view an old prison cell through a glass plate in the floor of the teller hall. In 2019, the Syke branch was rebuilt on the site of its predecessor building, which had been inaugurated in 1976. The bank was registered in the cooperative register at the Amtsgericht Walsrode under GnR 110010. Its legal basis was the Genossenschaftsgesetz and its statutes, with governance by the board of directors, supervisory board and members' representative assembly. It was affiliated with the official protection scheme of the Bundesverband der Deutschen Volksbanken und Raiffeisenbanken (BVR) and its voluntary additional protection scheme. In 2022, the bank distributed approximately 90,000 euros in donations to local non-profit organizations and clubs. It also supported financial education for young people in schools in cooperation with the Diakonisches Werk Diepholz-Syke-Hoya debt counseling service. Since 2014, it hosted the concert series "Jailhouse" in the historic bank building in Bassum, turning the teller hall into a stage for bands. In 2024, the bank merged with Volksbank Niedersachsen-Mitte eG, whose legal seat is in Hoya. The merger ended the independence of the Volksbank Bassum - Stuhr - Syke - Weyhe brand, and its business was integrated into the larger cooperative bank.
