It was founded in the UK in 1934 by its Dutch parent company and has remained part of the same privately-owned organisation. The company was renamed VolkerStevin in 2003. It operates in sectors including marine, defence, flood risk management, water and utilities, energy, and regeneration.

VolkerStevin's story began in the UK in 1934 when it was founded by its Dutch parent company, and it has remained part of the same privately-owned organisation ever since. In its early days, as Harbour & General Works Ltd, it mainly undertook marine works from its base in Morecambe, Lancashire. The company was renamed VolkerStevin in 2003. In 2009, its Dutch parent company consolidated VolkerStevin and its four other UK businesses to reinforce the identity as part of VolkerWessels UK. Today, with a head office in Preston, Lancashire, it works closely with its four UK sister companies.
