Overview
Vojenská história ("Military History") is a Slovak scholarly journal dedicated to military history, archival science and museology. It was established on 28 January 1997 by a decision of the Minister of Defence of the Slovak Republic, making it the only scientific periodical in Slovakia focused on military history, military archival science and military museology. Since 1 January 2006 its publisher has been the Vojenský historický ústav (VHÚ, Military History Institute) in Bratislava. The journal is a peer-reviewed academic title. Its stated aim is to present the latest research results in fields connected with military history, military archival science, military museology and related disciplines, and to provide space for polemical contributions consistent with its thematic focus. It also seeks to contribute to the education of members of the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic, employees of the Ministry of Defence, and the professional and lay public, and to help build the historical awareness of Slovak society. The journal does not publish advertising texts. Because of its narrow thematic profile, Vojenská história serves the professional needs of the defence sector, scientific workplaces and specialised schools. Non-professional readers can find it in all academic, state scientific, regional and district libraries. It is issued four times a year — in March, June, September and December — in a print run of 450 copies. Printed copies are distributed primarily to authors, partner scientific institutions, public libraries and for the benefit of the Ministry of Defence of the Slovak Republic. The online version is freely accessible without charge (Open Access), and individual issues are archived in electronic PDF format. Articles published in the journal are licensed. The journal carries two ISSNs: 1338-7154 for the online edition and 1335-3314 for the printed edition. It is indexed as an academic journal in Wikidata (Q17151354). Its editorial and publishing home, the Military History Institute, is a state institution under the Slovak Ministry of Defence, which gives the journal an official, state-owned character rather than a commercial one.
History
Vojenská história was founded on 28 January 1997 by a decision of the Minister of Defence of the Slovak Republic. From its inception it was conceived as a specialised scholarly periodical for military history, archival science and museology — the only such scientific journal in Slovakia. It began publication in 1997 and has appeared continuously since then. A significant institutional change occurred on 1 January 2006, when the Vojenský historický ústav (VHÚ, Military History Institute) in Bratislava became its publisher. The institute, a state institution within the Slovak defence sector, has since overseen the journal's editorial and distribution arrangements. A statute of the military history journal Vojenská história was issued by VHÚ in Bratislava in 2009, formalising its rules and mission. The journal has maintained a quarterly publication schedule, appearing in March, June, September and December, with a print run of 450 copies. Over time it added an Open Access online edition, with individual issues archived in PDF format, and it carries separate ISSNs for the online (1338-7154) and printed (1335-3314) editions. Its content is peer-reviewed and it does not carry advertising. The journal is distributed primarily to authors, partner scientific institutions, public libraries and for the benefit of the Ministry of Defence of the Slovak Republic, and it is available to readers in academic, state scientific, regional and district libraries across Slovakia.
