Overview

Vinařství Volařík is a family-owned Czech winery based in Dolní Dunajovice, in the Mikulov wine sub-region of South Moravia. The modern commercial brand was launched in 2007 by Ing. Miroslav Volařík, but the family's winemaking tradition reaches back to the years immediately after World War II, when Leopold Volařík settled in the borderlands and learned viticulture from the German inhabitants who were later displaced. The family lost its land and equipment to forced collectivization under the communist regime and could reclaim them only after the 1989 Velvet Revolution and the subsequent restitution process. The winery manages around 80 hectares of its own vineyards under integrated production, of which 4.2 hectares are farmed organically. It focuses on predicate wines, especially white varieties such as Ryzlink vlašský (Welschriesling), Ryzlink rýnský (Riesling), Veltlínské zelené (Grüner Veltliner), Pálava and Rulandské bílé (Pinot Blanc). Yields are deliberately low — no more than 2 kg of grapes per vine — and all grapes are harvested by hand. The estate's white-label TERROIR wines are named after individual vineyard sites, including Kotelna, Zelezna, Orechova hora, Vestonsko, Purmice, U Venuse and Plotny. Vinařství Volařík has established itself among the leading quality wine producers in the Czech Republic and has won numerous domestic and international awards. It has been a member of the Aliance vinařů V8 since 2011, a group of Moravian wineries promoting Moravian wine. Its honours include Champion of the Valtice Wine Markets (2011, 2013, 2014), Král vín for best collection (2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016) and Vinař roku (gold in 2011 and 2014, silver in 2016). The winery regularly places wines in the Salon vín České republiky, the annual selection of the country's 100 best wines, and in 2017 it had a record six wines in the Salon. It also had the best wine collection in the TOP 77 competition and in the international rosé competition Jarovín. The brand operates a winery and tasting facilities in Mikulov, a wine shop (Vinotéka Volařík), the Vinotéka U Čápa shop, and the Archivní sklep Volařík (Archive Cellar) in Dolní Dunajovice. It presents its wines at wine festivals and harvest celebrations across the Czech Republic, including the Pálavské vinobraní in Mikulov, and maintains an active presence on social media under the handle @vinarstvivolarik.

History

The Volařík family's winemaking tradition began shortly after the end of World War II, when Leopold Volařík arrived in Dolní Dunajovice as part of the settlement of the borderlands after the displacement of the German population. He acquired vineyards that had been confiscated from the Schultz family, German long-time residents. Before their forced displacement, the Schultz family remained in the area for some time, helped Leopold Volařík work the land and taught him the basics of viticulture and winemaking. This transfer of knowledge from the departing German inhabitants became the foundation of the family's craft. The communist takeover and subsequent collectivization forced the Volařík family to enter a collective farm (JZD) with all their land and equipment. They were allowed to keep only 10 ares (0.1 hectare) for private use. For decades, the family's winemaking tradition was effectively interrupted, and a return to commercial wine production was not possible until the 1989 Velvet Revolution. After the revolution, the family regained its property through restitution and resumed its winemaking and viticultural tradition, expanding its vineyard area. New young vineyards were planted in 2001 and the last ones in 2008. The modern Vinařství Volařík, which entered the market under this brand in 2007, was founded by Ing. Miroslav Volařík. The winery is a family business whose vineyards belong to the Mikulov wine sub-region. From the outset, it pursued a quality-focused approach, managing its vineyards under integrated production with strict yield control — no more than 2 kg of grapes per vine, pruning to a single cane with no more than 7 buds, and exclusively manual harvesting. The estate also farms 4.2 hectares organically. The winery produces predicate wines, especially white wines, and cultivates a range of varieties including Ryzlink vlašský, Ryzlink rýnský, Veltlínské zelené, Pálava and Rulandské bílé. It has developed its own range of terroir wines, with white-label TERROIR wines named after individual vineyard sites such as Kotelna, Zelezna, Orechova hora, Vestonsko, Purmice, U Venuse and Plotny. This approach joins the most reputable vineyards with the best varieties. Vinařství Volařík quickly established itself among the highest-quality wine producers in the Czech Republic and has been successful in domestic and international competitions. Since 2011 it has been a member of the Aliance vinařů V8, a group of wineries that joined forces to support the production and promotion of Moravian wines. Among its most prestigious Czech awards are the Champion title at the Valtice Wine Markets (2011, 2013, 2014), Král vín for the best collection (2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016) and Vinař roku (gold in 2011 and 2014, silver in 2016). The winery regularly has wines in the Salon vín České republiky, which presents the 100 best wines of the year; in 2017 it had a record six wines in the Salon, meaning every sixteenth wine was from Vinařství Volařík. It also had the best wine collection in the TOP 77 competition and in the international rosé wine competition Jarovín. Today the brand operates a winery and tasting facilities in Mikulov, a wine shop (Vinotéka Volařík), the Vinotéka U Čápa shop, and the Archivní sklep Volařík (Archive Cellar) in Dolní Dunajovice. It presents its wines at wine festivals and harvest celebrations across the Czech Republic, including the Pálavské vinobraní in Mikulov, and maintains an active social media presence under @vinarstvivolarik.
