Overview

Villa Madruzzo is a four-star hotel and restaurant located on the green hills just four kilometres from the historic centre of Trento, Italy. The property is built around a historic 16th-century noble residence and is organised into two independent but complementary areas: the Classic zone and the Belvedere area, the latter featuring a wellness centre. The hotel offers accommodation as well as dining at Ristorante Villa Madruzzo, which is open both to hotel guests and to the general public and serves national and Trentino cuisine. The venue also provides rooms and spaces for events and business meetings. The historic villa itself owes its name to the Madruzzo dynasty of prince-bishops of Trentino and was once owned by Cristoforo Madruzzo, who undertook major renovation works in Trento in preparation for the Council of Trent (1545–1563). After the death of prince-bishop Carlo Emanuele Madruzzo in 1658 the villa was abandoned, and in the mid-19th century it was restored by the Trentino industrialist Felice Mazzurana and his adopted son Paolo Oss Mazzurana, later mayor of Trento. Today Villa Madruzzo operates as a hospitality and dining brand under its own name, with its official website available in Italian, German and English.

History

Villa Madruzzo is a historic villa in Trento, Italy, whose name derives from the Madruzzo dynasty of prince-bishops of Trentino. The exact date of its construction is uncertain, but it is documented that the villa was first the private residence of Cristoforo Madruzzo. In preparation for the Council of Trent (1545–1563), Cristoforo Madruzzo undertook important renovation works in the city, with particular emphasis on the first outskirts, and Villa Madruzzo was one of the most prominent buildings constructed or renovated during the conciliar period, alongside the Palazzo delle Albere. After Cristoforo's death in 1578, the villa was inherited by his descendants: first by Ludovico Madruzzo, who left it to prince-bishop Carlo Gaudenzio Madruzzo, who in turn ceded it to Carlo Emanuele Madruzzo. According to some sources, Carlo Emanuele had an underground tunnel built to visit his lover Claudia Particella, a gentlewoman who lived in a house not far from Villa Madruzzo. The existence of such underground passages to facilitate the unnoticed movement of prince-bishops has been associated with other episcopal buildings in Trento, such as Castello del Buonconsiglio and Palazzo delle Albere, though some experts on Trentino history have questioned how widespread these tunnels were. The relationship between the prince-bishop and Claudia Particella, however, is historically uncontroversial and later became the subject of controversy and of a book by Benito Mussolini, then a young socialist editor, who published the historical novel L'amante del cardinale in instalments. After the death of prince-bishop Carlo Emanuele Madruzzo in 1658, Villa Madruzzo was abandoned. Towards the middle of the 19th century, the Trentino industrialist Felice Mazzurana and his adopted son Paolo Oss Mazzurana, who later became mayor of Trento, decided to carry out a series of restoration works on Villa Madruzzo. In the present day, the property operates as a four-star hotel and restaurant under the Villa Madruzzo name, with its official website available in Italian, German and English.
