Overview

Villa de Las Rosas is a human settlement and municipality located in the San Javier Department of Córdoba Province, Argentina. It sits in the Traslasierra Valley at 740 meters above sea level, at the western foot of Cerro Champaquí, the highest peak in the province. The town lies 14 km east of the departmental seat, Villa Dolores, and is connected by Provincial Route 14, which links it to Mina Clavero, Villa Cura Brochero, and other valley towns; it is 182 km from the city of Córdoba. According to the 2022 INDEC census, it had 5,968 inhabitants, a 31% increase from the 4,103 recorded in 2010. This figure includes the localities of El Pueblito, Las Chacras, and Alto Resbaloso - El Barrial. For census purposes, it forms part of the Villa Dolores - Villa Sarmiento - San Pedro - Villa de las Rosas agglomeration, which also includes the commune of Las Tapias. The town was one of the fastest-growing municipalities in Córdoba during the 2000s, reaching 3,988 inhabitants in the 2008 provincial census, a 114.99% increase over the 1996 provincial census when it had 1,855 residents, equivalent to an annual rate of 9.58%. The climate is similar to the European Mediterranean but slightly more continental, with summer temperatures approaching 41°C, winter temperatures a few degrees below 0°C, and most of the year around 25°C. The Traslasierra Valley is generally dry, but Villa de Las Rosas has a more humid microclimate that allows many flowering plants to grow spontaneously; the negative ionization of the air is considered highly beneficial for human life. The region experiences frequent low-intensity seismic activity, with a silence of medium to severe earthquakes every 30 years in random areas. Notable seismic events include those on 22 September 1908 (6.5 Richter), 16 January 1947 (approximately 5.5 Richter), 28 March 1955 (6.9 Richter), 7 September 2004 (4.1 Richter), 25 December 2009 (4.0 Richter), and 15 September 2013 (4.5 Richter, epicenter in Villa Berna, Calamuchita). The town's gastronomy is extensive and continually growing. One of its main tourist attractions is the "Feria Regional de Gastronomía y Artesanías" in its central plaza, where visitors can taste artisanal foods such as empanadas, cheeses and salamis, disco-cooked meals, paella and rabas, shawarma, tacos, mapioca and tapioca, vegetarian dishes, locro, grilled pizzas, juices and smoothies, craft beer, and more. The fair is held every Saturday at noon throughout the year, and during the high season (January and February) every Thursday and Saturday. The official municipal website serves as a portal for tourists and residents, with sections for "SOY TURISTA" (I am a tourist) and "SOY VECINO" (I am a resident).
