Overview

Vieskalainen was a Finnish free-distribution newspaper (ilmaisjakelulehti) published once a week, on Thursdays, from 1997 until May 2013. Its core delivery area covered the municipalities of Alavieska, Sievi and Ylivieska in Northern Ostrobothnia, and roughly once a month it was also distributed to other nearby municipalities. Distribution volumes varied between approximately 10,500 and 30,400 copies. The paper was printed by Suomalainen Lehtipaino Oy in Kajaani. The publishing company Vieskalainen Oy had existed since 1990, but it only began publishing the Vieskalainen newspaper in September 1997, after the competing Vieskan Viikko newspaper ceased operations. Esa Valli, then managing director of Viestimix Ky, was appointed editor-in-chief and managing director. In 2000 Tiina Suni took over as managing director. In November 2004 the paper was acquired by Suomen Paikallissanomat, part of the Alma Media group, and its editorial staff was merged with the group's existing Oulun Eteläinen newspaper. In December 2009 the paper passed from Alma Media to Jokilaaksojen Kustannus Oy, which publishes the Kalajokilaakso newspaper in Ylivieska. Publication of Vieskalainen was discontinued in May 2013. The paper's visual appearance was substantially renewed twice: in November 2004 when it moved to Suomen Paikallissanomat, and in June 2008 when its page dimensions changed as the printing location moved from Oulainen to Kajaani. Over its lifetime the paper had several editors-in-chief: Esa Valli (1997–2004), Marjaana Knuutila (2004–2006), Erkki Heikkilä (2006–2007), Teijo Mäki (2007–2009) and Seppo Kangas (from 2009).

History

The publishing company Vieskalainen Oy was established in 1990, but it did not begin publishing a newspaper until September 1997, when the competing Vieskan Viikko newspaper ceased operations. The new free weekly, named Vieskalainen, appeared on Thursdays and was distributed in Alavieska, Sievi and Ylivieska, with roughly monthly additional distribution to other nearby municipalities. Distribution quantities ranged from about 10,500 to 30,400 copies. The paper was printed by Suomalainen Lehtipaino Oy in Kajaani. Esa Valli, managing director of Viestimix Ky, was appointed editor-in-chief and managing director at the launch. In 2000 Tiina Suni became managing director. In November 2004 the paper was sold to Suomen Paikallissanomat, a company within the Alma Media group, and its editorial office was merged with the group's existing Oulun Eteläinen newspaper. The paper's layout was substantially redesigned at that time. In June 2008 the paper's page dimensions changed when the printing location moved from Oulainen to Kajaani, marking a second major visual renewal. In December 2009 the paper was transferred from Alma Media to Jokilaaksojen Kustannus Oy, the publisher of the Kalajokilaakso newspaper in Ylivieska. Publication of Vieskalainen was discontinued in May 2013. Across its history the paper had several editors-in-chief: Esa Valli (1997–2004), Marjaana Knuutila (2004–2006), Erkki Heikkilä (2006–2007), Teijo Mäki (2007–2009) and Seppo Kangas (from 2009).
