Videocon Telecom, legally known as Videocon Telecommunications Limited and previously associated with the name Videocon Mobile Services, was an Indian cellular communications operator within the Videocon Group. It entered the Indian mobile market during the expansion of competition that followed the allocation of additional 2G licences. The company launched commercial GSM services in Mumbai on 7 April 2010 and subsequently held licences covering a substantial portion of India's telecom-circle structure. At its peak, Videocon held authorisations for mobile services in 18 of India's 22 telecom circles, although it commercially operated in only 11 of those circles. Its footprint included markets such as Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh West, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh East and other circles. The business competed in a crowded and increasingly price-sensitive market against established national operators and newer entrants. Videocon's operating model was materially affected by the Supreme Court's 2012 judgment in the 2G spectrum case, which cancelled licences issued in 2008. The ruling removed a large number of licences across the industry, including licences associated with Videocon. The company subsequently participated in the 2012 spectrum auction and regained licences in six circles, allowing it to continue a more limited mobile operation. The company later began withdrawing from telecommunications. In November 2015, it agreed to sell spectrum in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh West to Idea Cellular. Those plans were superseded by Bharti Airtel's agreement in March 2016 to acquire Videocon's spectrum in all six circles in which it operated. The transaction was completed on 24 May 2016. Videocon shut down network operations in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh West on 26 December 2015, followed by Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh East on 11 May 2016. Punjab was handled separately through Quadrant Televentures, a wholly owned Videocon-related subsidiary formerly known as HFCL Infotel. Quadrant's Punjab holdings were not included in the Airtel transaction. The subsidiary operated mobile services as well as fixed-line and broadband services under the Connect Broadband brand. In 2017, Quadrant announced that it intended to discontinue mobile services in Punjab while retaining wired internet operations. Regulatory intervention required the company to maintain service for a period and manage subscriber migration. Videocon Telecom emerged as Videocon Group's telecommunications venture during a period when India's mobile market was expanding rapidly beyond the incumbent operators. The company was formerly identified as Videocon Mobile Services and operated through Videocon Telecommunications Limited. In March 2016, Bharti Airtel announced an agreement to acquire Videocon's spectrum in all six circles in which Videocon operated. The transaction covered paired 1800 MHz spectrum and was completed on 24 May 2016. Videocon closed its remaining networks in Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh East on 11 May 2016. These transactions and closures effectively ended Videocon Telecom's presence as a significant multi-circle mobile operator. Punjab followed a separate path. Mobile operations there were conducted through Quadrant Televentures, formerly HFCL Infotel, rather than through the spectrum package sold to Airtel. Quadrant also operated fixed-line and broadband services in Punjab under the Connect Broadband name. In January 2017, Quadrant told its approximately three million subscribers that mobile services would end on 15 February and encouraged them to port to other networks. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India objected to an immediate suspension because the company still held a unified access licence and required continuity of service. Quadrant stated that it intended to discontinue mobile service while retaining wired internet operations. Regulatory orders required continued service during the transition, and subscribers were later asked to port out by 18 April 2017. Videocon Telecom's mobile operating history consequently ended through a combination of regulatory disruption, spectrum transfers, market consolidation and network shutdowns.
