Overview

Vicuña Mackenna is a town and municipality located in the Río Cuarto Department of Córdoba Province, Argentina. It sits in the Pampas plains, approximately 300 km south of the provincial capital, Córdoba, at the crossing of National Roads No. 7 and No. 35. The town's economy is among the most dynamic in the area, driven by agriculture—primarily soybean, peanut, and corn—as well as dairy production and rural tourism. Several industrial establishments process agricultural and livestock products. The settlement's origins trace to 1904, when Clodomiro Torres requested provincial authorization to establish an agricultural village on lands that had once belonged to President Nicolás Avellaneda. The province governor Vicente Olmos ordered the creation of "Pueblo Torres" on 6 June 1904. The railway station, established in 1885 on the Buenos Aires–Mendoza line, had been named Vicuña Mackenna at the request of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, honoring his friend Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna, a Chilean writer and historian. In May 1911, Governor Félix Tomás Garzón decreed that Pueblo Torres adopt the station's name, and the original name disappeared from state documents. The Municipalidad de Vicuña Mackenna operates the official website mvm.gob.ar, which provides residents with access to municipal services such as debt consultation and payment, digital ballot enrollment, driver's license procedures, DNI/passport assistance, business registration, and complaint submission. The site also publishes local news, upcoming events, courses, health and environment information, and a transparency portal. The municipality's contact address is Libertador General San Martín 610, CP X6140, with phone numbers 3583 484555 / 484666 / 484777 and email recepcion@mvm.gov.ar. The town celebrates its local day on 19 March. In 2023, significant investments were made to its sewer network.

History

The area where Vicuña Mackenna now stands was originally provincial fiscal land known as "Bebe Vino." In 1874, Nicolás Avellaneda purchased these lands from the Córdoba Province. After Avellaneda's death, his widow donated the fields to two of their sons, who later sold them to Clodomiro Torres. In May 1904, Torres petitioned the provincial government to establish an agricultural village on the land, benefiting from provincial law. On 6 June 1904, Governor Vicente Olmos ordered the creation of "Pueblo Torres." Meanwhile, in 1885, a main railway line connecting Buenos Aires and Mendoza began passing through the area. The railway station was named Vicuña Mackenna at the request of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, in honor of his friend Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna, a Chilean writer and historian. In May 1911, Córdoba Governor Félix Tomás Garzón decreed that Pueblo Torres would adopt the name of the railway station, Vicuña Mackenna. After that date, the name Pueblo Torres disappeared from all state documents. The town developed as an agricultural and livestock center in the Pampas. Its economy grew around soybean, peanut, and corn cultivation, dairy production, and rural tourism. Industrial establishments focused on processing agricultural and livestock products. In 2023, large investments were made to its sewer network. The town's local day is celebrated on 19 March.
