Overview
Vetter Verkehrsbetriebe GmbH is a regional transport company headquartered in Zörbig, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Founded in 1946 by Wolfgang Vetter in Raguhn, the company has grown from a small bus and rental car operation into a group of subsidiaries providing public transport across several districts. It operates regional bus services in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district and the Eilenburg/Bad Düben area of Nordsachsen, as well as the urban bus network in Lutherstadt Wittenberg. The company also runs PlusBus lines and, since 2006, a passenger ship on the Goitzsche lake. Vetter Verkehrsbetriebe is privately owned by the Vetter family and is not listed on any stock exchange. Its website, mein-bus.net, serves as a passenger information portal for schedules, tickets, and service updates. The company has expanded through subsidiaries such as Regionalverkehr Bitterfeld-Wolfen GmbH, OBS Omnibusbetrieb Saalekreis GmbH, and V-Bus in Poland. In 2024 it acquired Auto-Webel from Delitzsch, which was renamed VarioLine in 2026. The company has also been involved in a Deutschlandticket fraud scheme.
History
Vetter Verkehrsbetriebe traces its origins to 1946, when Wolfgang Vetter founded the company in Raguhn, Germany. In 1950, the company acquired a property with a workshop and garages in Salzfurtkapelle, which remains the current operating yard. In 1965, the bus operation was converted into a limited partnership named Vetter KG, Omnibus- und Mietwagenbetrieb Salzfurtkapelle. During the expropriation wave in East Germany, the company was run as VEB Omnibus- und Mietwagenbetrieb Salzfurtkapelle, with Wolfgang Vetter serving as operations director. After the political turnaround in East Germany, Wolfgang Vetter regained private ownership in 1990 and founded Vetter GmbH, along with subsidiary Vetter-Touristik Reiseverkehrsgesellschaft mbH. In 1991, the company, together with the Bitterfeld district and the cities of Bitterfeld and Wolfen, founded Regionalverkehr Bitterfeld-Wolfen GmbH (RVB). In 1993, it established V-Bus as a subsidiary of Vetter GmbH in the Polish city of Żory. In 2000, Vetter GmbH and Magdeburger Verkehrsbetriebe GmbH (MVB) founded Verkehrsgesellschaft Magdeburger Umland mbH, and Hallesche Verkehrs-AG (HAVAG) and Vetter GmbH founded Saalebus GmbH. In 2004, Thomas Vetter joined the management and operations leadership of the company. In 2007, Vetter GmbH served public passenger transport in the Wittenberg district, and Kristin and Wolfdietrich Vetter joined the management of Personennahverkehrsgesellschaft Anhalt-Zerbst mbH. In 2015, Vetter subsidiary Regionalverkehr Bitterfeld-Wolfen took over regional and urban bus services in the Eilenburg region from Transdev's SaxBus Eilenburger Busverkehr GmbH following a successful tender; Vetter took over the Eilenburg operating yard and opened another customer office there. In 2024, Vetter acquired Auto-Webel from Delitzsch, which was renamed VarioLine as of 1 February 2026. The company has also been implicated in a fraud scheme involving Deutschlandtickets. Under the name Neuer Wittenberger Busverkehr, urban bus services in Lutherstadt Wittenberg were marketed from 2007. Until 2006, the former operator of urban bus services in Wittenberg was Scalar Wittenberg Omnibusverkehr GmbH, which has only been active in travel services since 2007. Until the end of 2021, Regionalverkehr Bitterfeld-Wolfen GmbH operated regional and urban bus lines in the Eilenburg and Bad Düben area under its own line concession. Since 1 January 2022, RVB has operated as a subcontractor on behalf of Nordsachsen Mobil GmbH. From the Eilenburg operating yard, it mainly serves lines of the former own bundle, with increasingly flexible use of subcontractors in the bus network of the Nordsachsen district. Lines 300, 301, 306, 307, 310, 471, and 480 were upgraded to PlusBus. Lines 310 (Dessau – Gräfenhainichen) and 471 (Dessau – Aken) also operate in the Bahn-Bus-Landesnetz Sachsen-Anhalt. Since 16 September 2006, the passenger ship Vineta has operated on the Goitzsche. At the end of 2009, the company also took over the passenger ship 'Muldeperle', which had been used on the Muldestausee but was severely damaged in a storm; it was not repaired and was scrapped in 2017. The Vetter GmbH has the following subsidiaries: Anhalt-Bus Busunternehmen, ARGE Prignitzbus, Dispotec Disposition Technology GmbH, OBS Omnibusbetrieb Saalekreis GmbH, ONC – Omnibus- und Nutzfahrzeug-Centrum, Regionalverkehr Anhalt-Bitterfeld, Regionalverkehr Bitterfeld-Wolfen GmbH, VarioLine GmbH, Vetter-Touristik RVG mbH, V-Bus Technik, V-Bus spolka z.o.o in Zory/Poland, KVG Klötzer Verkehrsgesellschaft.
