Overview

Vernagthütte (also called Würzburger Haus) is an Alpine Club hut of the Würzburg section of the German Alpine Club (Deutscher Alpenverein, DAV). It stands in the rear Rofental valley in the Weisskamm range of the Ötztal Alps, below the Guslar and Vernagt glaciers. The hut is a classic high-mountain base for mountaineers and hikers, offering accommodation and food in a remote glacier setting. It was built in 1901 and has been expanded several times, notably in 1932, 1976 and 1984. The hut sits slightly above the lateral moraines of the Guslar and Vernagt glaciers at their former confluence, placing it above the historical glacier high stand reached in the mid-19th century. Access is normally from Vent via marked long-distance trail no. 920, a walk of about four hours, passing the Rofenhöfe and Rofenalm, where the material cable car station is located. The hut is a starting point for numerous high tours and summit climbs, including the Wildspitze, Hinterer and Vorderer Brochkogel, Hochvernagtwand, Hochvernagtspitze, Schwarzwandspitze, Fluchtkogel, Kesselwand, Kesselwandspitze, Platteispitze, Guslarspitze, Weißseespitze and Mutspitze. It also serves as a link on multi-day traverses to the Breslauer Hütte, Brandenburger Haus, Braunschweiger Hütte, Taschachhaus, Rauhekopfhütte and Hochjoch-Hospiz. As a DAV section hut, Vernagthütte is a non-profit alpine facility rather than a commercial hotel chain; its brand identity is tied to the Würzburg section and the wider German Alpine Club hut network. Recent developments include a 2004 requirement to widen the entrance escape route, leading to the 2008 rebuild of the old entrance area including boot and drying rooms in timber construction; in 2015 a combined heat and power unit and photovoltaics were renewed with a switch to biodiesel, and facade shingles were replaced. A comprehensive renovation of the main building began in March 2024 and was planned for completion by the end of 2025. The winter room building was demolished in August 2024 and rebuilt to be avalanche-safe.

History

Vernagthütte was built in 1901 by the Würzburg section of the German Alpine Club and has served as a mountain base in the rear Rofental ever since. It was expanded in 1932, 1976 and 1984. The hut lies slightly above the lateral moraines of the Guslar and Vernagt glaciers at their former confluence, placing it above the historical glacier high stand reached in the mid-19th century. In 2004 the permitting authority required the entrance area (escape route) to be widened; as a result, in 2008 the old entrance area including the boot and drying room was demolished and rebuilt in timber construction. In 2015 the combined heat and power unit and photovoltaics were renewed, including a switch to biodiesel; during these works the facade shingles were also replaced. A comprehensive renovation of the main building began in March 2024 and was planned for completion by the end of 2025. The winter room building was demolished in August 2024 and rebuilt to be avalanche-safe. The hut remains an active DAV section facility, used as a base for high tours and as a link on multi-day traverses across the Ötztal Alps.
