Overview
Verlagsgruppe Beltz is a German publishing group. Its program areas include children's and young adult books, non-fiction and guides, psychotherapy and psychology, pedagogy, and Juventa. The publishing history traces its origins to 1841, when Julius Beltz founded a book printing business in Langensalza, Thuringia. The company is headquartered in Weinheim, where its address is Werderstraße 10.
History
The publishing history traces its origins to 1841, when Julius Beltz (1819–1892), then 22 years old, founded a book printing business in Langensalza, Thuringia, near Erfurt. In 1848, a liberal weekly newspaper, 'Freiheit – dem deutschen Volk gewidmet', was published and was banned after one year by the censors as 'too democratic'. In 1849, Julius Beltz established a school book shop for the Thuringian Teachers' Association. In 1868, the takeover of the Adolph Büchting publishing house in Nordhausen led to the establishment of a publishing business under the name Julius Beltz. In 1903, Julius Beltz (1880–1965), grandson of the founder, took over the company from his widowed mother Helene. From 1908, the company operated as 'Pädagogischer Verlag und Hofbuchdrucker des Fürsten von Schwarzburg-Sondershausen'. In 1909, with the purchase of the magazine 'Die Volksschule', a development began that made Julius Beltz a versatile school book publisher in the 1920s. In 1932, his son Wilhelm Beltz (1905–1975) joined the firm as a partner. The company, with over 300 employees in printing and publishing, was at its peak, with a publishing program comprising 16 magazines and well over a thousand books, complete writings, and reading booklets. From August 2017 to March 2018, the Research Center for NS Pedagogy at Goethe University examined the company's history during 1933 to 1946.
