Overview
Verlag Weber & Zucht was a German publishing house based in Kassel, active from 1976 to 2014. Founded by Helga Weber and Wolfgang Zucht, it grew out of the German peace movement and the nonviolent action groups of the 1970s, maintaining close ties with the Graswurzelrevolution magazine (founded 1972) and War Resisters International. The press published 35 titles covering nonviolence, alternative living, nonviolent action, anarchism, conscientious objection, and pacifism. Its list included works on and by Leo Tolstoy, Mahatma Gandhi, Clara Gertrud Wichmann, and Lanza del Vasto. In addition to publishing, the couple ran a mail-order bookstore for pacifist and anarchist literature. The publishing house and bookstore were absorbed into Verlag Graswurzelrevolution in 2014, which continues to distribute its books. The website zuendbuch.de now serves as an archive of the former publisher's pages, maintained by Helga Weber.
History
Verlag Weber & Zucht was established in 1976 in Kassel by Helga Weber and Wolfgang Zucht. Its founding was closely linked to the German peace movement, nonviolent action groups such as the Federation of Nonviolent Action Groups, and international networks like War Resisters International, as well as to the magazine Graswurzelrevolution, which had been published since 1972. The press joined the German Publishers and Booksellers Association (Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels) in 1980. Alongside publishing, the founders operated a mail-order bookstore specializing in pacifist and anarchist literature. Their stated aim was to offer as comprehensive a range as possible of literature on nonviolent social change, including works on the foundations and goals of a new social order and on mobilization and action techniques. By 2009, the publisher had released 35 publications. In 2014, both the publishing house and the mail-order bookstore were merged into Verlag Graswurzelrevolution, which continues to distribute the books of the former Verlag Weber & Zucht. The website zuendbuch.de now serves as an archive of the publisher's pages, maintained by Helga Weber.
