Overview

Verlag Schnell & Steiner is a German publisher founded in 1933 by art historian Dr. Hugo Schnell and publishing expert Dr. Johannes Steiner. It offers a comprehensive program of about 4,500 available titles in art and cultural history, archaeology, building history, and architecture, publishing 80 to 100 books and art guides annually. History

Verlag Schnell & Steiner was founded on 24 November 1933 by art historian Dr. Hugo Schnell and publishing expert Dr. Johannes Steiner, and began operations on 1 January 1934 in Munich. Both had lost their jobs in 1933 as declared opponents of National Socialism. The initial focus was on the 'Kleine Führer' (art guides), which present significant churches and art-historically interesting buildings in Germany, Austria, Italy, and Switzerland. On 15 February 1946, the publisher received its license again from the American military government. In 1975, the founding families sold their shares to the bishop's see in Regensburg. In 1993, the company headquarters were moved to Regensburg.
