History

Verlag Neue Kritik was founded in 1965 by the Bundesverband des SDS (Sozialistischer Deutscher Studentenbund). In its first phase, the program was derived from internal theoretical and political discussions. In 1965, 'Die Akkumulation des Kapitals' by Rosa Luxemburg was published in an edition of 300 copies, opening the series 'Archiv sozialistische Literatur'. This was followed by works by Leo Trotzki, Nikolai Bucharin, Henryk Grossmann, and others. In 1966, the series 'Probleme sozialistischer Politik' began with the conference volume 'Neokapitalismus, Rüstungswirtschaft, Westeuropäische Arbeiterbewegung'. During the student movement of 1967-1969, publications found increasing readership; initially at most 500 copies per title were sold, later 3000 copies per month of Ernest Mandel's 'Einführung in die marxistische Wirtschaftstheorie' were sold. In 1968, Reimut Reiche addressed sexuality, leading to another bestseller.
