Overview
Verlag Karl Alber is a German academic publisher specializing in philosophy, with a focus on contemporary philosophy, practical philosophy/ethics, phenomenology, philosophy of religion/theology, and history of philosophy. History
Karl Alber, owner of the Dorn'sche Buchhandlung in Ravensburg, founded the Bodenseeverlag Karl Alber in 1910, initially publishing art prints, etchings, travel books, and postcards. In 1939, after Karl Alber's death, Verlag Herder in Freiburg took over the company's legal form to publish its secular literature, which was prohibited for the confessional publisher under Nazi legislation. In 1939, the Verlag Karl Alber established a branch in Munich and began publishing belletristic literature. Under the direction of Johannes Harling, the publisher specialized after World War II in fine and scientific literature. One of the first books published in 1946 was 'Der SS-Staat' by Eugen Kogon. The belletristic program included works by Werner Bergengruen, Alfred Döblin, and Reinhold Schneider. In 1950, the specialization into a humanities publisher began.
