Overview
Verizon is the consumer and corporate brand of Verizon Communications, a major American telecommunications company headquartered in New York City. Its principal activities are wireless communications, fixed broadband, enterprise networking, cloud and security services, Internet of Things connectivity, and related digital products. In the United States, Verizon is best known for its mobile network and for Fios, its fiber-based broadband and television service. The company also serves businesses, public-sector organizations, and multinational customers through connectivity, managed-network, communications, and information-technology offerings. The company’s roots lie in the 1980s restructuring of the Bell System. Bell Atlantic was established as one of the Regional Bell Operating Companies created after the breakup of AT&T and initially served Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. It expanded materially through its 1997 combination with NYNEX, which added New York and New England operations. In 2000, Bell Atlantic completed its merger with GTE, a large telecommunications operator with businesses outside Bell Atlantic’s original territory. The surviving company adopted the Verizon name, formed from the ideas of “veritas” and “horizon,” and became Verizon Communications. Wireless became central to the company’s identity. In 2000, Bell Atlantic and Vodafone created Verizon Wireless as a joint venture, combining Bell Atlantic’s mobile operations with Vodafone’s AirTouch and PrimeCo interests and GTE’s wireless assets. Bell Atlantic held a majority stake. Verizon Wireless subsequently expanded through spectrum purchases and acquisitions, including Rural Cellular and Alltel, and became the largest wireless carrier in the United States by customer scale. Its network strategy evolved from early 3G services to nationwide 4G LTE and then to 5G deployments. Verizon also developed a substantial fixed-line and consumer-services business. Fios Internet launched in 2004 using fiber-optic infrastructure, followed by Fios TV in 2005. The company later concentrated its fixed-line footprint on selected markets, selling or transferring various rural, regional, and international operations. In enterprise services, the 2005 acquisition of MCI added corporate customers and international network assets and supported the creation of Verizon Business. Later purchases such as Terremark, CyberTrust, and Hughes Telematics broadened the company’s capabilities in cloud infrastructure, security, and connected vehicles. During the 2010s, Verizon experimented with digital media and content ownership. It acquired AOL in 2015 and Yahoo’s operating business in 2017. These assets were combined under Oath, later renamed Verizon Media, but the business was subsequently sold to Apollo Global Management and returned to the Yahoo name. Verizon’s current strategic emphasis is more closely associated with wireless connectivity, broadband, network quality, enterprise technology, and the commercial deployment of 5G than with owning a broad consumer-media portfolio. Verizon remains a publicly traded company listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol VZ. Its business is primarily United States-focused, although its enterprise and technology operations support customers and networks internationally. The brand competes principally with AT&T and T-Mobile in wireless and broadband, while also facing competition from cable operators, fiber providers, cloud companies, systems integrators, and specialized enterprise-network suppliers.
History
Verizon’s corporate history begins with the 1980s breakup of the Bell System. Bell Atlantic was created as one of seven Regional Bell Operating Companies and began operations in the Mid-Atlantic states. Its initial business centered on local telephone service, but regulatory change, technological transition, and consolidation gradually pushed it toward long-distance communications, wireless services, broadband, and enterprise networking. In 1997, Bell Atlantic merged with NYNEX. The combination brought together Bell Atlantic’s Mid-Atlantic operations with NYNEX’s New York and New England businesses. Although Bell Atlantic was the surviving legal company, the headquarters moved to New York City. The merger created a broader regional platform just as the United States telecommunications industry was preparing for increased competition and convergence among local, long-distance, wireless, and Internet services. Bell Atlantic’s next major step was the combination with GTE. Announced in 1998 and completed in 2000 after regulatory review, the transaction brought GTE’s extensive telecommunications operations into the company. The combined organization changed its name to Verizon Communications. The new name was intended to signal a national, technology-oriented company rather than a regional telephone operator. Regulatory approval included conditions intended to preserve competition and encourage investment in broadband and new markets. Wireless was organized as a separate but strategically critical joint venture. In 2000, Bell Atlantic and Vodafone combined mobile assets from Bell Atlantic, AirTouch, PrimeCo, and GTE to form Verizon Wireless. Its scale enabled broader national coverage than most regional competitors. Verizon Wireless later used acquisitions and spectrum purchases to expand, including the purchase of Rural Cellular in 2008 and Alltel’s wireless operations the same year. These transactions strengthened coverage in rural areas and helped Verizon become the largest United States wireless carrier by customer count. The company invested heavily in data networks. It launched 3G service in 2002, fiber-based Fios Internet in 2004, and Fios TV in 2005. Verizon subsequently deployed 4G LTE beginning in 2010 and entered commercial 5G service in the late 2010s. Alongside consumer connectivity, Verizon built an enterprise business through the acquisition of MCI in 2005, followed by investments in security, cloud infrastructure, telematics, and managed technology services. CyberTrust, Terremark, and Hughes Telematics each supported a different part of that diversification. From the mid-2000s onward, Verizon disposed of various wireline, directory, international, and rural assets to focus capital on wireless, broadband, and strategic technology businesses. It sold or transferred operations in several states and international territories, while also monetizing wireless-tower interests and using spectrum auctions to improve network capacity. The company’s attempt to become a major digital-media owner was comparatively short-lived. Verizon acquired AOL in 2015 and Yahoo’s operating business in 2017, combining them as Oath and later Verizon Media. The business struggled to achieve the scale and market position of the largest digital advertising platforms. Verizon sold the operation to Apollo Global Management in 2021, after which the assets returned to the Yahoo brand. Verizon has also faced labor disputes, network-service failures, privacy controversies, billing complaints, patent litigation, and regulatory scrutiny. These events have periodically challenged its reputation for reliability and customer service, but the company has remained an active, publicly traded telecommunications operator. Its modern identity is centered on wireless connectivity, Fios broadband, 5G, enterprise communications, cybersecurity, and connected technologies.
