Overview

Vereinsbrauerei Apolda GmbH is a brewery based in Apolda, in the German state of Thuringia. Its roots reach back to documented brewing rights in Apolda from 1440, and over the centuries local brewing communes merged and evolved. In 1887 two Apolda breweries came together, and the joint-stock company Vereinsbrauerei Apolda AG was formally founded on 8 August 1888. During the East German era it was renamed VEB Vereinsbrauerei Apolda in 1952 and in 1969 incorporated into the VEB Getränkekombinat Erfurt. After reunification it was privatised on 31 May 1991 and has since been privately owned. The brewery produces a range of beers under the Apoldaer brand, including pilsners, dark and wheat beers, festival and specialty beers. Its portfolio includes Apoldaer Glocken Pils, Apoldaer Premium Pils, Apoldaer Spezial Domi, Apoldaer Festbock, Apoldaer Glocken Hell, Apoldaer Tradition, Apoldaer Diamant Extrapils, Apoldaer Export, Apoldaer Radler, Apoldaer Hefeweizen, Apoldaer Hefeweizen Dunkel, Apoldaer Tafelbier, Apoldaer Narrenbräu and Apoldaer Schwarzer Esel. The company emphasises traditional craftsmanship, regional ingredients and open fermentation. Today the brewery operates a visitor centre, brewery tours, a fan shop and hosts events such as the Apoldaer Oktoberfest and the Bockbieranstich. Its beers are sold regionally and can also be ordered online. The company markets itself with the slogan 'Wir Thüringer trinken Apoldaer' and positions itself as a home for authentic Thuringian brewing tradition.

History

Brewing in Apolda is documented as far back as 1440, when brewing rights of the estate and town were granted to certain groups of citizens. In 1710 citizens united into a 'society' that later became known as 'Vorstädter'. In 1826 the assessor Börner succeeded in merging these two brewing communes. From 1830 the Apolda brewing industry benefited from the rise of the textile industry and the expansion of the railway. From 1844 the brewing commune began purchasing contracts aimed at creating legal property as an independent brewery. In 1872–1873, 46 citizens participated in the 'Städtische Braugenossenschaft zu Apolda, Karl Kürschner & Co'. In 1884 the company was entered in the commercial register and transformed into a brewery cooperative (Karl Kürschner & Co.). Meanwhile, from 1860 a second brewing company, 'Gebr. Bohring', developed. On 1 October 1887 the two breweries came together, laying the cornerstone of 'Vereinsbrauerei Apolda AG'. The founding act took place on 8 August 1888. In 1952, during the era of the GDR, the brewery was renamed VEB Vereinsbrauerei Apolda and in 1969 incorporated into the 'VEB Getränkekombinat Erfurt'. After reunification, the brewery was privatised on 31 May 1991 and has since belonged to private interests. The brewery continues to operate in Apolda, producing a wide range of beers and offering brewery tours, a fan shop and events. Its product range includes numerous Apoldaer-branded beers such as Glocken Pils, Premium Pils, Spezial Domi, Festbock, Glocken Hell, Tradition, Diamant Extrapils, Export, Radler, Hefeweizen, Hefeweizen Dunkel, Tafelbier, Narrenbräu and Schwarzer Esel.
