Overview

Verdi Classics was a free-to-air television channel in Catalonia, Spain, dedicated to classic cinema. It was operated by Emissions Digitals de Catalunya (EDICA), a company owned by OC 2022, and was part of the Squirrel Media group. The channel launched on 23 November 2021, replacing BOM Cine on the same frequency, following an agreement between EDICA and the Cinemes Verdi cinema chain. Its programming focused on classic films, with some titles broadcast in Catalan, and it also carried a selection of movies from A Contracorriente Films. The channel was available on DTT in Catalonia, the Aragon Strip and Andorra; on Movistar+ in Catalonia, the Valencian Community, the Balearic Islands, the Aragon Strip and Andorra (via Andorra Telecom); on Vodafone TV and Orange TV only in Catalonia; and over the internet through the OTT service Tivify across Spain. In addition to films, it aired the entertainment programme Sense Control, presented by Elena Batista and Nacho Encinas, which covered gastronomy, culture and cinema. Verdi Classics ceased broadcasting in October 2023, with its final closure occurring after midnight on 16 October 2023, following a planned end date of 15 October 2023. It was part of a portfolio that also included BOM Cine, BOM Radio and the production and distribution company Vértice 360.

History

Verdi Classics began broadcasting on 23 November 2021, replacing BOM Cine on the same frequency. Verdi Classics was associated with the Catalan language, while BOM Cine broadcast in Spanish. The channel's programming consisted of classic films, some of which were shown in Catalan, and it also featured a selection of movies from A Contracorriente Films. It aired the entertainment programme Sense Control from Monday to Thursday, 12:00 to 14:00, presented by Elena Batista and Nacho Encinas, covering entertainment, gastronomy, culture and cinema, with audience participation through giveaways. Its end was scheduled for 15 October 2023, but the definitive closure did not take place until after midnight on the following day, 16 October 2023. There were indications that an agreement was near for all DTT frequencies belonging to (not associated with) EDICA, where 8tv and Verdi Classics were broadcast, to soon begin broadcasting Canal 4 (Catalonia).
