Overview
The Verband der Bayerischen Textil- und Bekleidungsindustrie e. V. (VTB), known in English as the Bavarian Textile and Clothing Industry Association, is an employers' and trade association based in Bavaria, Germany. It represents the shared and sector-specific interests of the Bavarian textile and clothing industry, acting simultaneously as a professional association, an employers' association and an economic association. Its membership comprises roughly 130 member companies with around 20,000 employees, and it advocates for the industry in social, economic and collective-bargaining matters before the public, government, political parties, authorities, business organizations and trade unions. The association is a registered non-profit body (eingetragener Verein) and does not pursue commercial gain or party-political purposes. The VTB in its current form has existed since 1993, when three predecessor associations were merged: the Verein der südbayerischen Textilindustrie e.V., the Verband der nordbayerischen Textilindustrie e.V. and the Verband der bayerischen Bekleidungsindustrie e.V. Its central office is in Munich, and it maintains a second office in Hof (Saale). The association is organized into an honorary leadership — the president and the Präsidium (executive board) — and a full-time staff led by the Hauptgeschäftsführer (chief executive), with teams in both Munich and Hof. The VTB's range of services and advisory topics covers labour law and social policy, foreign trade and trade policy, payment and delivery terms, environmental protection, vocational training and further education, and collective bargaining policy. It negotiates collective agreements and advocates for modern, flexible industry-wide collective agreements that accommodate both large and small companies and their global interests. It also runs training and further-education offerings, information services and cooperation projects, and participates in industry events such as the Hofer Vliesstofftage (Hof Nonwovens Days). Leadership of the association has included Herbert Frey as the first president of the merged association from 1993, followed by Milan Danek in 1997, and Christian Heinrich Sandler of Sandler AG, who has served as president since the beginning of 2003. Philipp von Waldenfels has been announced as the new president of the VTB. The full-time management is led by Hauptgeschäftsführer RA Stefan Satl in Munich, with RA Xaver Aschenbrenner as deputy chief executive in Hof.
History
The Verband der Bayerischen Textil- und Bekleidungsindustrie e. V. traces its roots to the nineteenth century. On 1 July 1870, the Verein süddeutscher Baumwollindustrieller (Association of South German Cotton Industrialists) was founded in Augsburg. At the beginning of the twentieth century, South German entrepreneurs joined together, and in 1903 the Verband süddeutscher Textilarbeitgeber (Association of South German Textile Employers) was founded, with its seat in Augsburg and offices in Hof, Freiburg and Stuttgart. On 26 January 1934, the association was dissolved. After the Second World War, the industry reorganized. In 1946/1947, the Verband der nordbayerischen Textilindustrie e.V. was founded (1947) out of the Verein der nordbayerischen Textilindustrie (1946), while in southern Bavaria the Verein der südbayerischen Textilindustrie was founded in Augsburg with 22 founding companies. In 1946, the Landesverein der bayerischen Bekleidungsindustrie was founded in Munich, and on 13 March 1947 it was renamed the Landesverband der bayerischen Bekleidungsindustrie. In 1993, the three founding associations — the Verein der südbayerischen Textilindustrie e.V., the Verband der nordbayerischen Textilindustrie e.V. and the Verband der Bayerischen Bekleidungsindustrie e.V. — merged to form the Verband der Bayerischen Textil- und Bekleidungsindustrie e.V. Herbert Frey was elected the first president of the new association. He was succeeded in 1997 by Milan Danek. Since the beginning of 2003, Dr. Christian Heinrich Sandler has led the association as president. Philipp von Waldenfels has been announced as the new president of the VTB. The association's guiding motto, "Innovation hat Tradition" (Innovation has tradition), reflects the long, tradition-rich history of the textile and clothing industry, whose manufacturing origins reach back to the Middle Ages, when clothing was made from hemp, flax or wool. In its current form, the VTB represents around 130 member companies with roughly 20,000 employees, with its central office in Munich and a second office in Hof (Saale).
