Overview

Venn Records is an independent British record label founded in 2012 by Laurent 'Lags' Barnard, guitarist of the UK punk band Gallows. The label was born out of necessity: after Gallows parted ways with Warner Bros. following a heated split, the band decided to release their own music rather than court new major-label partners. The name 'Venn' came from a brainstorming session involving Venn diagrams, and it reflects the label's ethos — no genre is off the table. Venn has released punk, extreme metal, electronic, folk and hardcore records, united by a commitment to artists who are true to their craft and challenge the status quo. In its early years, Venn served as a springboard for acts such as Marmozets, Tigercub, Heck (then Baby Godzilla), Grove Street Families and Milk Teeth. More recently, the label has released music by MOBO winners Bob Vylan, as well as Witch Fever, High Vis, CLT DRP, Static Dress, Meryl Streek, Jamie Bower and Wargasm. The label operates primarily as a physical music retailer through its online shop, selling vinyl, CDs and merchandise, with releases often available in limited editions and bundled with signed prints or download codes. It also offers gift cards in denominations of £10, £25, £50 and £100. Venn Records remains a private, independent operation. Its founder, Laurent 'Lags' Barnard, has signed to two major labels as an artist and released music through respected independent labels in the UK and internationally, experience that informs Venn's artist-friendly approach. The label ships internationally, with dedicated Bandcamp channels for EU customers, and continues to champion a diverse, genre-fluid roster from its UK base.

History

Venn Records was founded in 2012 by Laurent 'Lags' Barnard, guitarist of the UK punk band Gallows. The label emerged after Gallows split from Warner Bros. Records following a heated dispute. Rather than seek another major-label deal, the band opted to start their own record company. The name 'Venn' was chosen during a brainstorming session involving Venn diagrams, and it was intended to signal an open, genre-agnostic approach: the label would be equally comfortable releasing electronic, extreme metal, folk or punk music, provided the artists were genuine and challenging. In its early years, Venn Records provided a platform for several acts that went on to wider recognition, including Marmozets, Tigercub, Heck (then known as Baby Godzilla), Grove Street Families and Milk Teeth. The label also became the home for Gallows' next era of releases. Over time, Venn expanded its roster to include MOBO Award winners Bob Vylan, as well as Witch Fever, High Vis, CLT DRP, Static Dress, Meryl Streek, Jamie Bower and Wargasm. The label operates as an independent entity, with Barnard's experience as a musician signed to both major and independent labels shaping its artist-friendly policies. Venn Records sells its releases primarily through its own online store, offering vinyl, CDs, merchandise and gift cards, with many items available in limited editions and bundled with extras such as signed prints or download codes. The label ships internationally and maintains a Bandcamp presence for EU customers. As of the mid-2020s, Venn Records remains active and continues to release new music across its diverse roster.
