Overview
VELOTAXI (marketing spelling VELOTAXI) is a German brand under which a business model consisting of advertising marketing and bicycle taxis is licensed. The brand is owned by BAYK AG, which acquired the production, distribution and trademark rights in 2017 through an asset deal. The core of the Velotaxi concept is the marketing of mobile advertising space on bicycle taxis, which serves as the economic foundation of the business. The vehicles themselves are modern rickshaws designed for the European market, known as CityCruiser models, which serve as eye-catching, environmentally friendly advertising carriers in high-frequency urban environments. The Velotaxi story began in 1997 in Berlin, when Ludger Matuszewski founded the company to implement a new environmentally friendly local transport system financed by an underlying advertising concept. Starting with 30 bicycle taxis, the concept grew to approximately 2,500 vehicles in use worldwide. The CityCruiser I was designed in 1999/2000 by the Berlin office gewerkdesign, and from 2002 it was produced and marketed by Veloform GmbH. Further technical and design developments led to the CityCruiser II and the DeliveryCruiser. In 2009 Veloform GmbH acquired Velotaxi GmbH and the trademark rights. In 2011 the marketing of vehicles and the Velotaxi brand were separated, with the brand in Germany taken over by eco next GmbH and its local partners. In 2017 BAYK AG acquired production, distribution and trademark rights. The chassis are manufactured by Adestra in Pilsen, with final assembly at BAYK AG's workshop in Pielenhofen. The brand representation by eco next GmbH officially ended in 2020, and the Velotaxi brand is now marketed by the trademark owner BAYK AG together with brand partners at individual locations. The Velotaxi concept has been implemented in 52 countries and over 120 cities worldwide, often under different names. The vehicles serve both as an addition to inner-city traffic and as trendy event vehicles, finding sustainable use in urban mobility. The advertising marketing remains the supporting pillar of the Velotaxi business, offering clients an innovative, memorable advertising medium with fast adaptation to changing campaigns and digital advertising and city tours during the ride.
History
Velotaxi was founded in 1997 in Berlin by Ludger Matuszewski to implement a new environmentally friendly local transport system financed by an underlying advertising concept. The operation started with 30 bicycle taxis, modern rickshaws developed for the European market. Over time, the concept expanded globally, and today approximately 2,500 vehicles are in use worldwide. The Velotaxi "CityCruiser I" was designed in 1999/2000 by the Berlin office gewerkdesign. From 2002, the CityCruiser I was produced and marketed by Veloform GmbH. Between 2004 and 2007, Veloform GmbH, in collaboration with gewerkdesign, further developed the technology and design. The successor models were the "CityCruiser II" – a bicycle rickshaw for passenger transport – and the "DeliveryCruiser" – a shorter, more compact delivery or shop version. In 2009, Veloform GmbH acquired Velotaxi GmbH and with it the naming rights to the word mark. In 2011, the marketing of the vehicles and the Velotaxi brand were separated. The brand in Germany was taken over by the Berlin-based eco next GmbH and its local cooperation partners. In 2017, BAYK AG acquired the production and distribution ("Cruiser – Das Velotaxi") as well as the naming rights to the word mark through an asset deal. The chassis are manufactured by the company Adestra in Pilsen. Final assembly of the vehicles takes place in the BAYK AG workshop in Pielenhofen. The brand representation VELOTAXI by eco next GmbH was officially ended in 2020. The Velotaxi brand is now marketed by the trademark owner, BAYK AG, together with brand partners at the individual locations. The concept has been implemented to date in 52 countries and over 120 cities worldwide, often under different names.
