History
VEI B.V. was established in 2005 by Dutch water operators as an initiative of eight Dutch drinking water companies committed to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG6): sustainable water and sanitation for everyone. The founding partners are Vitens N.V., Evides Waterbedrijf N.V., WML, Waterbedrijf Groningen, Brabant Water, WLN (laboratory), PWN, WMD and Dunea. VEI was created to implement the international Corporate Social Responsibility policy of these utilities, and it is a full subsidiary of Vitens N.V. and Evides Waterbedrijf N.V. From its headquarters in Utrecht, the Netherlands, VEI has developed into a world-leading organisation implementing Water Operator Partnerships (WOPs). It facilitates peer-supported partnerships between water operators worldwide, sharing knowledge and skills to make utilities stronger, healthier and more resilient. Over the years, VEI has expanded its activities to around 20 countries, with projects in Africa, Asia and South America, capacitating employees from water utilities and helping people in low-income areas gain access to improved water services. According to its website, VEI has been active in 21 countries with 41 projects, reaching 715,846 people. VEI's approach combines peer-to-peer collaboration, training, technical assistance and smart investments. It works alongside local water utilities to systematically improve the maturity of their working processes. The organisation contributes to SDG6 and aims to help 11.5 million people directly or indirectly benefit from sustainable water services over the period 2015–2030. In recent years, VEI has identified three strategic themes for the coming years: Climate Adaptation, Sanitation and Crisis Resilience. These reflect the significant challenges water utilities face, including climate change impacts, insufficient sanitation coverage and the expansion of service areas to accommodate displaced residents. VEI is uniquely positioned to support utilities through long-term partnerships and the WOP model, ensuring services remain resilient and effective even amidst natural disasters, disease outbreaks and migration pressures.
