Overview

VegMag is a French media brand dedicated to plant-based eating and vegetarian living. It began in 2006 as Végétariens Magazine, a bimonthly French review founded by Jean-Marc Royer and initially published by the SARL Netino. The magazine, subtitled La revue de la bio-cohérence, covered vegetarianism and its benefits for health, the environment, humans and animals, offering articles and features on health, nutrition, ecology, philosophy, humanitarian issues and animal advocacy, along with practical tips, children's stories and vegan recipes. Its editorial stance was initially centred on animal ethics, particularly regarding animals raised for meat, and it later broadened toward a more general balance-with-nature perspective, aligning with anti-speciesist movements and philosophers such as Peter Singer. It counted well-known readers including Brigitte Bardot and received support from figures such as Paul Watson. From 2009 the magazine was published by SARL Valian, which became independent from Netino on 29 October 2010. Valian also launched a second animal-advocacy title, Regard Animal, in September 2010, which was soon folded into VegMag. The print magazine ceased publication in December 2011, and subscribers were directed toward Alternatives végétariennes. Publication directors included Jean-Marc Royer (launch to April 2009) and Julie Lescieux (May 2009 to December 2011); editors-in-chief over the years included Jean-Marc Royer, Jessica Boucher-Rétif, Mireille Bouvier, Julie Lescieux and Rose Doublet Potdevin. Today VegMag continues as an online publication at vegmag.fr, publishing vegan recipes, nutrition guidance and coverage of environmental and societal debates around plant-based diets. Its editorial charter distinguishes reproducible recipes — with quantities, times and substitutions — from nutritional guidance that cites published authorities or studies and reminds readers that a complete diet should be built with a professional. The site covers health, nutrition, ecology, animal welfare and practical everyday advice, and offers advertising opportunities.

History

VegMag was founded in 2006 as Végétariens Magazine, a French bimonthly review created by Jean-Marc Royer. It was initially published by the SARL Netino. Subtitled La revue de la bio-cohérence, the magazine presented vegetarianism and its benefits for health, the environment, humans and animals. Its content included articles and features on health, nutrition, ecology, philosophy, humanitarian issues and animal advocacy, as well as practical fact sheets and everyday advice, children's stories and vegan recipes. Its initial positioning was primarily centred on ethics toward animals, especially those raised for meat such as pigs, cattle and poultry. It therefore addressed first and foremost vegetarians who abstain from meat out of concern for not killing or exploiting animals. Over the years the review evolved toward greater tolerance and openness, framing animal advocacy within a broader balance with nature, considering the killing of animals — living and natural beings — as unnatural. It continued to defend the thesis that animals have a right to live free and that killing them for food violates their elementary rights. In this it was close to anti-speciesist movements and to philosophers such as Peter Singer. It counted committed readers including Brigitte Bardot, who in 2006 reacted to an article by writing to Slovenian president Janez Drnovšek to publicly praise his animal-protection actions. It also received support from figures such as Paul Watson, co-founder of Greenpeace. From 2009 the magazine was published by the SARL Valian. Initially a subsidiary of Netino, Valian became independent on 29 October 2010. In September 2010 Valian launched Regard Animal, a second review focused on animal defence and aimed at all animal lovers, vegetarian or not; it was quickly folded into VegMag. VegMag ceased publication in December 2011. After its disappearance, subscribers were invited to turn to Alternatives végétariennes. Publication directors were Jean-Marc Royer from the launch to April 2009, then Julie Lescieux from May 2009 to December 2011. Editors-in-chief were Jean-Marc Royer (launch to September 2007), Jessica Boucher-Rétif (October 2007 to June 2008), Mireille Bouvier (July 2008 to 2009), Julie Lescieux (from 2009) and Rose Doublet Potdevin (2010–2011). Initially distributed nationally in newsstands by the MLP, VegMag was later available only by subscription, as well as in some organic shops and at stands during organic and/or vegetarian festivals and forums. The brand continues today as an online publication at vegmag.fr. Its about page describes a focus on plant-based food, the plate and society: recipes that work in the kitchen, cautious nutritional reference points, and the public debates surrounding these choices. It distinguishes recipes — which give quantities, time and substitutions — from nutritional guidance, which cites the authority or study it comes from and reminds readers that a complete diet is built with a professional. The site covers reproducible dishes, nutrition and deficiencies based on published references, and environmental, sector and debate topics treated without superficial activism. It invites readers to consult its editorial charter, contact it via a form, or discover its advertising offers.
