Overview
The VDSt Straßburg-Hamburg-Rostock is a German student fraternity (Studentenverbindung) based in Hamburg and affiliated with the Verband der Vereine Deutscher Studenten (VVDSt), also known as the Kyffhäuserverband. It was founded on 3 May 1919, shortly before the University of Hamburg itself opened on 13 May 1919, and was the first student corporation admitted at the university. In August 1919 it was accepted into the Kyffhäuserverband. The fraternity's unusual triple name reflects its history of mergers and tradition-keeping. In May 1920 the Altherrenbund (alumni association) of the VDSt Straßburg was attached to the Hamburg fraternity, after the University of Strasbourg had been closed and German corporations had been banned in the former Alsace-Lorraine. From 1921 the fraternity was known as VDSt Straßburg-Hamburg. In 1964, after the construction of the Berlin Wall and the banning of student corporations in East Germany, the VDSt Straßburg-Hamburg agreed with the Altherrenbund Rostock to take over the tradition of the VDSt Rostock; this arrangement was confirmed and extended by a formal agreement in 1970, and the fraternity has since existed as the unified VDSt Straßburg-Hamburg-Rostock with a shared alumni body. Like other VDSt fraternities, the Hamburg-Rostock chapter defines itself through the principles of the Lebensbund (lifelong bond), democratic decision-making through Convente, tolerance, and the political, black, and association principles. It is politically and socially active, participating in the VDSt-Akademie of its umbrella organization VVDSt, which was recognized by UNESCO in 2006 and 2008 as a project of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. In 2006 the VDSt-Akademie received the title "Official Project of the UN World Decade 2006/2007 – Education for Sustainable Development." The fraternity organizes lecture series and discussion evenings on topics such as Islam and the Middle East (summer semester 2007), Europe and the financial crisis, and energy policy (summer semester 2013). Membership offers a community of students from various disciplines, study tips and tutoring, political education through conferences and lecture evenings, soft-skill training (public speaking, rhetoric, general knowledge), affordable rooms in a prime location, parties, cocktail evenings, wine seminars, dance courses, and a worldwide network of young academics and experienced professionals. Members can visit other VDSt fraternities in 32 German cities as well as in Austria, Poland, Denmark, Croatia, Romania, and Hungary. The fraternity also supports members in finding part-time jobs and internships. The VDSt Straßburg-Hamburg-Rostock has occupied several premises in Hamburg. In 1930 it moved into the house "Straßburg" in Werderstraße. In 1956 it moved into a former anti-aircraft battery crew barracks on Rothenbaumchaussee. On 19 November 1989 it moved into a floor near the Außenalster, where it remained for over 21 years; the building was demolished in May 2011, and on 1 April 2011 the fraternity had already moved into a new fraternity house one street away. In October 2012 the fraternity took over the one-year chairmanship of the Kyffhäuserverband for the second time, and the association's conference in May 2013 was held in Hamburg for the first time in the association's history.
History
The VDSt Straßburg-Hamburg-Rostock was founded on 3 May 1919 as the VDSt Hamburg, before the University of Hamburg opened on 13 May 1919, and was admitted as the first student corporation at the university. In August 1919 it was accepted into the Kyffhäuserverband. In May 1920 the Altherrenbund of the VDSt Straßburg was attached to it, after the University of Strasbourg had been closed and German corporations had been banned in the former Alsace-Lorraine. In 1921 the VDSt Straßburg-Hamburg joined the "Wissenschaftliches Institut der Elsaß-Lothringer im Reich." Throughout the Weimar Republic, events related to Strasbourg and Alsace-Lorraine shaped the life of the Hamburg fraternity, which in 1922, for example, took part in the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the re-founding of the University of Strasbourg. In the early years of the Weimar Republic, the corporations under the strong influence of the VDSt Straßburg-Hamburg refused to march under the black-red-gold flag at the rector's handover at the end of 1921. In terms of content, the VDSt Straßburg-Hamburg dealt particularly with questions of ethnicity (Volkstumsfragen) and took an active part in "borderland work" in North Schleswig. It participated prominently in the affairs of the Hamburg student body. In 1930 it moved into the house "Straßburg" in Werderstraße. In 1932 the VDSt left the "Hochschulring Deutscher Art" and formed the "Widerstandsblock," which was intended to gather students who stood between the corporations and the strong NS-Studentenbund; in 1933 the Hamburg fraternity took over the chairmanship of the Kyffhäuserverband. From autumn 1934 many VDSter entered military service, membership declined sharply, and eventually a Kameradschaft formed outside the NS-Studentenbund. Soon afterwards the house had to be sold, and in 1938 the VDSt Straßburg-Hamburg was dissolved under pressure from the National Socialists. After the war, an active fraternity was re-founded on 31 May 1951. The program of the entire association led the VDSt Straßburg-Hamburg to an intensive engagement with questions of German reunification, which remained a special focus in the following decades. In 1956 it moved into a former anti-aircraft battery crew barracks on Rothenbaumchaussee as its residence and activity center. It developed very actively during this time and sometimes counted more than 50 active members. Several times the VDSt Straßburg-Hamburg took over the chairmanship of the Hamburger Korporationsring and Hamburger Konvent; due to its geographical location it dealt intensively with political questions arising from the East-West relationship. Its members often took leading roles in the Kyffhäuserverband. The good relationship with the VDSt Rostock led in 1964 to an agreement with the Altherrenbund Rostock, according to which the VDSt Straßburg-Hamburg took over the care of the tradition of the VDSt Rostock after the construction of the Berlin Wall and the banning of student corporations in the GDR. This agreement was confirmed and extended by a formal agreement in 1970, and the VDSt Straßburg-Hamburg-Rostock existed thereafter as a unified fraternity with a shared alumni body. On 19 November 1989 the VDSt Straßburg-Hamburg-Rostock moved into a floor near the Außenalster, which existed for over 21 years. In May 2011 the building was demolished. The VDSt Straßburg-Hamburg-Rostock had already moved into a fraternity house one street away on 1 April 2011. The VDSt Straßburg-Hamburg-Rostock distinguishes itself from other corporations through its social and political work and was awarded the title "Official Project of the UN World Decade 2006/2007 – Education for Sustainable Development" by UNESCO in 2006 as part of the VDSt-Akademie. In October 2012 the VDSt Straßburg-Hamburg-Rostock took over the one-year chairmanship of the Kyffhäuserverband for the second time. The association's conference in May 2013 was held in Hamburg for the first time in the history of the association.
