It is one of Turkey's most enduring literary publishers, closely associated with the influential cultural magazine Varlık, which has been a platform for Turkish poetry, fiction, and criticism. The publisher's early decades were prolific: in its first 35 years it issued nearly a thousand original and translated works, including titles by major Turkish authors such as Cahit Sıtkı Tarancı, Orhan Veli Kanık, Sait Faik Abasıyanık, Nurullah Ataç, Ziya Osman Saba, Oktay Akbal, Mahmut Makal, Necati Cumalı, Fazıl Hüsnü Dağlarca, Behçet Necatigil, Cahit Külebi, Orhan Kemal, Haldun Taner, and Tahsin Yücel. The house's first book was Cahit Sıtkı Tarancı's poetry collection Otuz Beş Yaş. In 1979 it received the Ministry of Culture Grand Award. Today Varlık continues to publish books and the monthly Varlık magazine, maintaining its literary focus and its tradition of supporting new voices through awards such as the Yaşar Nabi Nayır Poetry and Story Prizes.
