Overview

Vargas Holding AB is a Swedish investment enterprise founded in 2014 and based in Stockholm, Sweden. It operates as an incubator that builds disruptive businesses from the ground up, focusing on high-emission and hard-to-abate industries, and has since evolved into an active, long-term owner of the ventures it has incubated. Its ventures include Polarium, Stegra (formerly H2 Green Steel), Aira, Syre and Northvolt, and it has also co-founded and invested in Arctial together with Rio Tinto, Mitsubishi Corporation and Tesi. History

Vargas was founded in 2014 as an incubator to identify, validate, finance, launch and scale impact companies addressing high-emitting, hard-to-abate sectors. The journey began in 2014 when Stefan Jansson, a former executive at Northstar, approached Harald Mix to provide seed financing for a new start-up in the battery industry, aiming to provide smart and sustainable lithium-ion battery energy storage systems for the telecom industry. This became Polarium, Vargas' first venture. Vargas co-founded Northvolt in 2016 together with Peter Carlsson and Paolo Cerruti, and launched H2 Green Steel (now Stegra) in 2021 under the leadership of Henrik Henriksson. Vargas has also co-founded and invested in Arctial, a project company developed together with Rio Tinto, Mitsubishi Corporation and Tesi, which is conducting a feasibility study for low-carbon production in Finland. Vargas' investments have been financed principally through Kallskär, the investment vehicle of Harald Mix.
