History

Varbergs teater was built in 1895 according to designs by architect Lars Kellman. It became a central venue for performing arts in Varberg. In 1961, a major restoration was carried out under the direction of architect Artur von Schmalensee. Over the years, the seating capacity was reduced by 78 seats, leaving a total of 319 seats across the stalls and two balconies. The theatre has also served as a cinema, lecture hall, and concert venue, and is known for its good acoustics. In March 2009, the County Administrative Board (Länsstyrelsen) recommended that Varbergs teater be declared a listed building (byggnadsminne). On 17 May 2011, Varberg Municipality Council also supported this. The building was granted listed status on 27 June 2011. The theatre is located at the corner of Engelbrektsgatan and Kungsgatan, at Engelbrektsgatan 5. Kungsgatan was Varberg's main thoroughfare until the mid-1940s. The theatre can be connected to the adjacent Varberg Library when needed. Today it is part of the Kulturhuset Komedianten cultural centre and continues to host a wide range of events, from theatre and concerts to lectures and stand-up.
