Overview
Van Lanschot Kempen is an independent Dutch financial group focused on wealth management rather than mass-market retail banking. Its activities combine private banking, investment management and specialist investment banking for affluent individuals, entrepreneurs, families, institutions and professional investors. The group is headquartered in 's-Hertogenbosch and has roots reaching back to 1737, when Cornelis van Lanschot established a trading house there. This long history makes it one of the oldest continuously operating financial institutions in the Netherlands and the wider Benelux region. The original business traded colonial goods across Brabant, Limburg, the principality of Liège, the Duchies of Cleves and Jülich, and parts of Belgian Brabant. Trading gradually brought the firm into financial services: it collected and discounted bills of exchange, exchanged foreign currencies and handled financial matters for commercial clients. During the twentieth century, the firm evolved from a family-controlled merchant house into a banking organization. Its banking operations initially remained concentrated in 's-Hertogenbosch, but the company expanded through branches, acquisitions and a growing presence in the central and southern Netherlands. The group’s current Private Banking business serves high-net-worth individuals, entrepreneurs, family businesses, executives and professionals, as well as foundations and associations. It also targets people entering the wealth-management market. Activities are concentrated in the Netherlands, Belgium and selected international locations. In Belgium, the business operates under the Mercier Van Lanschot name, following the combination of Van Lanschot Belgium and Mercier Vanderlinden. Evi van Lanschot is the group’s digital savings and investment proposition for mass-affluent customers and first-time investors in the Netherlands and Belgium. Investment Management, historically associated with Kempen Capital Management, operates as a specialist boutique. Its strategies include high-dividend equities, fixed income, alternative and hedge-fund solutions, real estate, small-cap equities and infrastructure. Investment Banking, historically known as Kempen & Co, provides capital-markets advice, debt advisory, equity research and trading, mergers and acquisitions services, and related corporate-finance support. These businesses give Van Lanschot Kempen a broader institutional offering than a traditional private bank while retaining a specialist positioning. The company expanded through a series of acquisitions, including CenE Bankiers, Kempen & Co, the UK fiduciary-management business of MN, Staalbankiers’ private-banking business, UBS’s Dutch wealth-management business, Hof Hoorneman Bankiers, Mercier Vanderlinden and Accuro. The acquisitions strengthened its presence in healthcare finance, investment banking, fiduciary management, Dutch private banking and Belgian wealth management. The group’s shares have been traded on Euronext Amsterdam since 1999. Van Lanschot Kempen presents itself as a long-term, relationship-led wealth manager with a strong emphasis on stewardship and sustainable investment. It is authorized as a bank by the Dutch central bank under the Dutch Financial Supervision Act and is supervised by De Nederlandsche Bank and the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets. Its cultural and sustainability activities include support for the Van Gogh Museum, the Royal Concertgebouw and the Dutch nature foundation Stukje Natuur.
History
Van Lanschot Kempen traces its origins to 22 July 1737, when Cornelis van Lanschot founded a trading house in 's-Hertogenbosch. The enterprise initially dealt in colonial goods and served commercial networks across the southern Netherlands and neighboring territories. Its work with merchants led naturally to financial functions, including bill collection, bill discounting and foreign-exchange transactions. The firm remained connected to the Van Lanschot family for much of its history. In 1901, the business was converted from a general partnership into a limited partnership under the name F. van Lanschot. Banking activities were originally conducted from 's-Hertogenbosch. From the 1950s onward, the organization expanded its office network, particularly in the southern Netherlands, and in the 1970s it acquired several Dutch banks. During the 1980s it added offices in central parts of the country. The ownership structure began to broaden in the 1970s. National Westminster Bank became the first non-family shareholder in 1973 through a minority investment in Van Lanschot's Beleggings-Compagnie and later became the majority shareholder before selling its interest in 1994. The company pursued a more explicit expansion strategy from 1991 and opened offices in Belgium that year. A family member continued to serve as chief executive until Jan Cees van Lanschot died in 1991; Bert Heemskerk then led the bank, followed by Floris Deckers, Karl Guha and Maarten Edixhoven. Van Lanschot’s equity securities began trading on Euronext Amsterdam in June 1999. The group expanded its specialist capabilities through acquisitions. In 2004 it bought CenE Bankiers from ING, adding financial services expertise for the healthcare sector. In 2007 it acquired Kempen & Co, an Amsterdam investment-banking and brokerage firm founded in 1903. The Kempen business became an important platform for investment management and specialist investment banking, including research, trading, capital-markets transactions and corporate finance. In 2013 the group launched Evi van Lanschot, an online savings and investment platform designed for mass-affluent clients and people making their first investments. Further expansion followed in institutional and private wealth management. In 2015 the company acquired the UK fiduciary-management business of MN. In 2016 it purchased the private-banking business of Staalbankiers, and in 2017 it acquired UBS’s Dutch wealth-management business. Hof Hoorneman Bankiers was acquired in 2021. The Belgian business became increasingly important. Van Lanschot acquired 70% of Mercier Vanderlinden in 2021 and the remaining 30% in 2022. Mercier Vanderlinden had been established in 2000 by Stéphane Mercier and Thomas Vanderlinden as a family-wealth management firm. In 2024, Mercier Vanderlinden and Van Lanschot Belgium were brought together under the Mercier Van Lanschot brand. The group also acquired Accuro in 2023, with its clients and employees subsequently moving to Mercier Van Lanschot. Van Lanschot Kempen now operates through three principal activities: Private Banking, Investment Management and Investment Banking. Its private-banking activities cover the Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland, while investment-management and investment-banking teams operate from European and U.S. financial centers. The group remains regulated as a Dutch bank by De Nederlandsche Bank and is subject to conduct supervision by the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets. It also supports cultural heritage and sustainability initiatives, including the Van Gogh Museum, the Royal Concertgebouw and Stukje Natuur.
