Overview

VAMED is an Austrian healthcare group founded in 1982 and headquartered in Vienna. It originated as a project company for the completion of the Vienna General Hospital (AKH) and grew into an international provider of healthcare infrastructure and services. The company is a subsidiary of the German healthcare group Fresenius. VAMED's activities have spanned hospital planning and construction, technical and infrastructural management, rehabilitation and care facilities, and health tourism through its VAMED Vitality World spa division. It has delivered projects in over 80 countries and has been a pioneer of public-private partnerships (PPPs) in healthcare. In Austria, VAMED Vitality World operates thermal spa and wellness centres and is a leading provider of private rehabilitation. Since 2024 the company has been undergoing a transformation involving four transactions: the rehabilitation business was sold to PAI Partners in October 2024; the hospital services business was integrated into Fresenius Health Services in January 2025; the international project business was sold to Worldwide Hospitals Group (WWH) in April 2025; and the Austrian project business and VAMED Vitality World thermal operations were sold to PORR at the end of December 2025. On 16 September 2025, VAMED AG — primarily the holding company — was renamed VIACAMA AG.

History

VAMED was founded in 1982 as a project company for the completion of the Vienna General Hospital (AKH). It subsequently organised healthcare projects beyond Vienna: in the Middle East from 1984, in Africa from 1985, and in Asia from 1987. From 1986 it also engaged in building and property management. Since 1989 VAMED has been active in the management of thermal spas, since 1991 in hospital management, and since 1993 in the development of healthcare construction projects. In July 1996, VAMED, previously wholly owned by ÖIAG (Österreichische Beteiligungs AG), became 77% owned by the German healthcare group Fresenius SE & Co. KGaA and 10% by B & C Holding, with Österreichische Beteiligungs AG retaining 13%. In 2008 the company developed projects in Latin America and activities in nursing homes. By 2013 VAMED had realised its 20th PPP model. In 2017, VAMED had completed more than 800 projects in over 80 countries and 25 PPP models on 5 continents. In 2018 VAMED acquired the rehabilitation and care business of Helios in Germany, expanding its position in rehabilitation and care to 67 healthcare facilities. By 2018 the group had realised more than 900 projects, including 25 public-private partnerships on five continents. VAMED has provided services to around 840 healthcare institutions with 153,000 beds worldwide. It was the first company to receive the ECRI certificate for medical management. In Austria, VAMED Vitality World operates thermal spa and wellness centres with about 3.2 million customers and 10 locations, and VAMED is the leading private rehabilitation provider in Austria. Since 2024, VAMED has been undergoing a transformation process involving four transactions: the rehabilitation business was sold to PAI Partners in October 2024; the hospital services business was integrated into Fresenius Health Services in January 2025; the international project business was sold to Worldwide Hospitals Group (WWH) in April 2025; and the Austrian project business and VAMED Vitality World thermal operations were sold to PORR at the end of December 2025. On 16 September 2025, VAMED AG — primarily the holding company — was renamed VIACAMA AG.
