Overview
The Valencian Institute of Economic Investigations (Instituto Valenciano de Investigaciones Económicas, Ivie) is a private economic research centre based in Valencia, Spain. It was created in 1990 by the Generalitat Valenciana (the regional government of the Valencian Community) and operates with the support of private and banking foundations, including CaixaBank, Fundación BBVA, Fundación Mediterráneo, Ford-España, Fundación de las Cajas de Ahorros and Fundación Cañada Blanch. Its mission is to develop and promote economic research and to project that research both nationally and internationally. Ivie's work spans a broad set of fields: capitalisation, growth and productivity; human capital, education and employment; the university system; the economics of knowledge and digitalisation; economic impact analysis; design and evaluation of public policies; regional financing; the Valencian economy; income distribution; demography and territory; financial and banking economics; globalisation; sectoral studies; and business competitiveness. The institute produces working papers, articles, books, reports and databases, and maintains long-running data projects such as the Observatorio de la Productividad y la Competitividad en España (OPCE), capital stock and human capital series, and participation in international projects like EU KLEMS, SPINTAN, INDICSER, ICTNET and PREDICT. A distinctive feature of Ivie is its close collaboration with Valencian universities. Professors from the University of Valencia, the University of Alicante, the Universitat Jaume I and other universities lead its studies and research, lending academic prestige and quality assurance to its output. In 2011 Ivie created the Fundación Ivie de la Comunitat Valenciana to strengthen its engagement with its environment and broaden its activities. Since 2013, Ivie has been a research institute attached to the University of Valencia. Ivie serves public and private institutions and companies that request economic information and technical assistance, organises scientific congresses, and promotes the training of specialised research personnel. Through its publications, databases and collaborative networks, it acts as a bridge between economic research and the decisions of economic agents, contributing to evidence-based policy and business strategy in Spain and beyond.
History
The Valencian Institute of Economic Investigations (Ivie) was created in 1990 by the Generalitat Valenciana, the regional government of the Valencian Community, as a centre dedicated to the development and promotion of economic research and its projection at national and international level. From its foundation, it has combined public initiative with support from private and banking foundations, including CaixaBank, Fundación BBVA, Fundación Mediterráneo, Ford-España, Fundación de las Cajas de Ahorros and Fundación Cañada Blanch. Ivie's activities are structured around several core functions: carrying out studies and research, organising scientific congresses, issuing specialised publications, creating databases that improve economic information, promoting the training of specialised research personnel and consolidating teams of specialists, contributing to connections between research work and the decisions of economic agents, offering information and technical assistance on economic topics to public and private institutions and companies, and fostering relations with national and foreign scientific institutions to promote collaborative networks. A key element of Ivie's model is its close collaboration with Valencian universities. A group of professors from the University of Valencia, the University of Alicante, the Universitat Jaume I and other universities direct the institute's studies and research, guaranteeing the quality of the work through their academic prestige. In 2011, Ivie created the Fundación Ivie de la Comunitat Valenciana with the aim of improving its collaboration with its environment and expanding its activities. Within this line of action, since 2013 Ivie has been a research institute attached to the University of Valencia. Over the years, Ivie has developed diverse lines of research structured around topics such as capitalisation and growth; human capital, education and employment; social capital; banking and finance; international economics and competitiveness (including EU KLEMS); design and evaluation of public policies; economic impact studies; regional financing; contribution and financing of universities; sectoral studies; demography and immigration; income distribution; the Valencian economy; and the generation of databases. Its website lists numerous research areas, publications and databases, including the Observatorio de la Productividad y la Competitividad en España (OPCE), capital stock and human capital series, and participation in international projects such as SPINTAN, INDICSER, ICTNET and PREDICT. Through these activities, Ivie has established itself as a reference centre for economic research in the Valencian Community and Spain.
