Overview

Vakarų laivų gamykla, AB — trading as BLRT Western Shipyard — is a Lithuanian marine engineering corporation headquartered in Klaipėda, the country's principal ice-free seaport. It is the flagship shipbuilding and ship-repair business of the Estonian industrial group BLRT Grupp and the anchor of the Western Shipyard Group, which the company describes as one of the largest marine engineering corporations in Lithuania for five decades. The group incorporates 21 companies active in different fields and offers services covering the entire life cycle of a ship, from newbuilding and complex design to repair, conversion, and end-of-life handling. The company's core activities are shipbuilding, ship repair and conversion, complex ship design and engineering, production of large and complex metal structures and high-technology equipment, and port services, logistics and stevedoring. Its Klaipėda yard operates three floating docks with lifting capacities of 27,000 t, 30,000 t and 33,000 t, the largest of which — 235 m by 45 m — is described as the largest floating dock in the Baltics. Supporting infrastructure includes a 100 t floating crane, a 104 t Liebherr LHM 400 mobile crane, ten 30 t pier cranes, 150,000 m² of workshops, 3 km of quay with 14.5 m depth, and about 5 km of internal railway. The Western Shipyard Group is the largest employer in Western Lithuania, creating over 3,000 work positions. Its subsidiaries extend the group's reach into port logistics: Western Stevedoring (founded 2003) operates five specialized terminals in the southern part of Klaipėda Seaport handling dry-bulk, break-bulk, liquid and packed cargoes as well as heavy-lift and oversized equipment; Western Ships Agency (founded 2002) provides agency, chartering and freight forwarding services in Klaipėda and Tallinn; and Elme Transportas (founded 2003 from the group's transport department, active in road transport since 1993) provides international and domestic cargo delivery, forwarding and equipment rental. The business traces its origins to 1969, when the Vakarų laivų remonto įmonė (Western Ship Repair Enterprise) was established in Klaipėda. It was privatized in 1998 and sold to the Norwegian Western Invest group, but the investors failed to meet their financial obligations; in 2001 the company passed to the Estonian BLRT Grupp, and in 2003 it was renamed Vakarų laivų gamykla (Western Shipyard). By 2011 the group reported revenue of LTL 427.937 million (about EUR 124 million). Today it remains a privately held subsidiary within BLRT Grupp, positioned as a full-service Baltic shipyard and marine engineering partner.

History

The Western Shipyard's history began in 1966, when it was decided that a large-tonnage ship repair yard would be built in the southern part of Klaipėda port, specializing in the construction and repair of the Lithuanian fleet. The enterprise was formally established in 1969 as Vakarų laivų remonto įmonė (VLRĮ, Western Ship Repair Enterprise). In 1998 the company was privatized and sold to the Norwegian group Western Invest, taking the name Vakarų laivų remontas (Western Ship Repair). By 2000 it employed 1,600 people. However, the Norwegian investors were unable to meet their financial obligations, and in 2001 the company passed into the ownership of the Estonian BLRT Grupp. In 2003 it was renamed Vakarų laivų gamykla (Western Shipyard), reflecting a broader scope that included shipbuilding as well as repair. Under BLRT Grupp the business expanded into a group structure. Western Ships Agency was established in 2002 and Western Stevedoring in 2003, extending the group into ship agency, chartering, freight forwarding and cargo handling in Klaipėda Seaport. Elme Transportas was created in 2003 through the reorganization of the group's transport department, which had been engaged in motor transport since 1993. By 2011 the group reported revenue of LTL 427.937 million, equivalent to about EUR 124 million, and comprised 23 companies active in ship repair and conversion, shipbuilding, metal construction, cargo operations, ship agency, metalworking, engineering design, international freight and logistics, laboratory testing, household services, and finance and accounting. In the 2020s the company presents itself as BLRT Western Shipyard, the anchor of the Western Shipyard Group, which it describes as one of the largest marine engineering corporations in Lithuania for five decades. The group incorporates 21 companies and provides services across the entire life cycle of a ship. It is the largest employer in Western Lithuania, with over 3,000 work positions. Its Klaipėda facilities include three floating docks (27,000 t, 30,000 t and 33,000 t lifting capacity), the largest measuring 235 m by 45 m and described as the largest floating dock in the Baltics, along with a 100 t floating crane, a 104 t Liebherr LHM 400 mobile crane, ten 30 t pier cranes, 150,000 m² of workshops, 3 km of quay at 14.5 m depth, and roughly 5 km of internal railway.
