Overview

The Vajolet refuge (Rifugio Vajolet) is a historic alpine hut in the Rosengarten group of the Dolomites, located in the municipality of San Giovanni di Fassa, Trentino, Italy. Situated at 2,246 metres above sea level at the Porte Neigre, it lies below the Vajolet Towers and at the centre of numerous walks, excursions and vie ferrate. The refuge offers local food, including gluten-free and vegan dishes, and provides half-board or full-board accommodation. It is typically open from mid-June to mid-September and has 130 beds plus a winter room with 12 beds. The refuge is owned by the Società degli Alpinisti Tridentini (SAT).

History

The Vajolet Refuge was built in 1897 by the DuÖAV division of Leipzig. In 1902 another small construction was added close to it. As this proved to be insufficient, the Leipzig division enlarged the Refuge further in 1906. The Vajolet Refuge was again expanded in 1912, and in 1923 it transferred to the S.A.T., Trento. In the years that followed the Vajolet Refuge became an important base for climbers and excursionists who frequented that zone of the Catinaccio. The refuge is closely associated with Tita Piaz, one of the most famous alpinists of the Dolomites. He married the daughter of the innkeeper in 1903 and ran the refuge himself for years, until he was replaced as innkeeper in the 1920s due to his open opposition to fascism. He then built the nearby Rifugio Paul Preuss.
