Overview

UZIN UTZ is a German manufacturer of flooring installation systems, machines and tools, headquartered in Ulm. Founded in 1911 by Georg Utz as a chemical products factory in Vienna, the company evolved from producing detergents, shoe polishes and floor cleaning products into a specialist in flooring adhesives after the Second World War. Today it describes itself as a leading supplier of flooring systems with more than a century of experience, offering innovative solutions for screeds, floors, tiles and parquet. The group brings together six brands under the umbrella brand UZIN UTZ: UZIN (installation systems for screeds, floors and wood flooring), WOLFF (machines and specialized tools for floor removal, substrate preparation and floor installation), PALLMANN (wood floor finishes, adhesives and surface treatment), Arturo, codex and Pajarito. These brands support craftsmen, planners, architects and builders in the realization of their projects. The joint campaign "The Art of Floor Systems" has visualized the brand family's unity since 2022 through a corporate design that gives each brand a distinct visual identity. UZIN UTZ is a family business now in its fourth generation, with the Utz family holding approximately 55 percent of the shares. It is a German public company listed in the CDAX. The company employs around 1,400 people and is a leader in the development and manufacture of product systems, machines and tools for floor processing. It operates internationally, with subsidiaries and manufacturing sites in Europe and North America, including UZIN UTZ Manufacturing North America Inc. in the United States. Sustainability is a central theme: UZIN UTZ published its first sustainability report in 2015, and in 2010 its UZIN brand became the first in the industry to have a complete product system certified with Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). The company's corporate philosophy emphasizes authenticity and diversity in the workplace, and it positions itself as a pioneer committed to developing sustainable and advanced flooring solutions.

History

UZIN UTZ was founded in 1911 by Georg Utz as a chemical products factory (Fabrikation Chemischer Produkte) in Vienna. In its early decades the company mainly produced detergents, shoe polishes and floor cleaning products. After the Second World War, Georg's son Willi laid the foundation for the company's adhesives era, registering the name Uzin at the German Patent Office in 1948. This opened a new segment—flooring adhesives—and marked the beginning of a success story that continues today. During the 1970s and 1980s the company consolidated its market position in Germany and Europe, and Werner Utz was called into the management. In the mid-1980s the company developed a complete program of adhesives, achieving a breakthrough in the flooring and parquet segments. From 1989 to 1996 UZIN UTZ specialized in the manufacture of branded products and as a service provider in the building trades, interior finishing and specialist retail. During this period the Uzin-ÖkoLine was introduced and the sales organization was expanded. In 1997 the company was converted into a stock corporation (Aktiengesellschaft) and the shares were listed on the stock exchange the same year. The acquisition of the Swiss Tyro AG between 1998 and 2000 gave the company a second production site, and planning began for two new dry mortar plants in Poland and France. Construction of a new logistics center in Ulm started, from which deliveries are made throughout Europe. The company also acquired a stake in Wolff Spezialmaschinen GmbH in Vaihingen an der Enz, expanded the ÖkoLine production program, took over Pallmann GmbH & Co. KG in Munich and opened a plant in France. On 1 April 2002 the Austrian specialist manufacturer of parquet sealants and care products, AV Chemische Technische Produkte Ges. m. b. H. in Vösendorf near Vienna, was acquired. In 2003 the company bought the paint factory Hch. Jordan in Würzburg. In 2004 followed the takeover of the Unipro companies in Haaksbergen (Netherlands) and Ghent (Belgium), and Pallmann GmbH & Co. KG and Lackfabrik Hch. Jordan GmbH were merged into JP Coatings. In 2005 UZIN UTZ bought SIGA Flor AG and renamed it Sifloor AG. In 2006 all flooring activities were bundled under the umbrella brand Ufloor Systems. In 2007 Hermann Frank GmbH & Co. KG in Flehingen was integrated into the group, and the new tile brand codex emerged from Uzin Fliesen und Naturstein. In 2008 the acquisitions of RZ Chemie GmbH and Genial Produkte GmbH (Meckenheim near Bonn) followed, and Sifloor products were integrated into the Uzin brand. In 2009 the new Uzin ÖkoLine product line and a range of Pallmann products were awarded the environmental seal "Der Blaue Engel," which they now carry alongside the Emicode EC 1. Also in 2009, DS Derendinger AG in Thörishaus, Switzerland, was acquired. Since 2010 UZIN UTZ has been the first company in the industry whose UZIN brand has a complete product system certified with EPDs (Environmental Product Declarations). Since 2011 the Norwegian company Løkken AS in Skien has belonged to UZIN UTZ, and in the same year the Swabian family business celebrated its 100th anniversary. JP Coatings GmbH was merged retroactively as of 1 February 2013 into Genial Produkte GmbH, and the company now operates as Pallmann GmbH with headquarters in Würzburg. UZIN UTZ SE also acquired further shares in Arendicom GmbH, holding 35.0 percent. In 2014 Hermann Frank Verwaltungs GmbH and Hermann Frank GmbH & Co. KG were renamed WOLFF Verwaltungs GmbH and WOLFF GmbH & Co. KG. In 2015 production started at the newly built machine factory at the Ilsfeld site of WOLFF GmbH & Co. KG and at UZIN UTZ Manufacturing North America Inc. in the USA; the first sustainability report was also published that year. In 2016 there was a change in the executive board—Thomas Müllerschön became CEO of the group, and Beat Ludin and Heinz Leibundgut joined the board. In 2018 there was another change: Julian and Philipp Utz, together with Heinz Leibundgut, took over the management, and the international subsidiaries were renamed "UZIN UTZ." With effect from 1 August 2018, the tool manufacturer Pajarito from Mettmann in North Rhine-Westphalia was acquired by UZIN UTZ. The company continues to operate as a family business in its fourth generation, with the Utz family holding approximately 55 percent of the shares, and is listed in the CDAX.
