Overview

Uusi Apteekki (officially Seurusteluravintola Kaskenkatu 1) is a beer restaurant in the III district of Turku, Finland. It occupies the early-20th-century premises of the former Turun Uusi Apteekki (Turku New Pharmacy), which had moved to the site in 1907 into a Jugendstil building designed by architect Frithiof Strandell. Strandell also designed the pharmacy's fittings, which were largely preserved when the space was converted into a restaurant. The restaurant opened on 27 January 1993 and is known in beer circles simply as Uusi Apteekki. The venue offers a broad selection of beers and ciders, a substantial malt whisky range, wines and other spirits. It is open Sunday to Thursday 14–24 and Friday to Saturday 14–02. In 2015 a jury appointed by the Helsinki Beer Festival named Uusi Apteekki Beer Restaurant of the Year. Within the same premises operated Kaskenmäen Panimo, described as Finland's first private brewpub, which began in spring 1993. Its British-style bitter, Vanhan Luostarin Kellariolut, went on sale at Uusi Apteekki on 22 July 1993. Brewing was mainly seasonal, from autumn to spring. Later products included Kaski-Portteri (7.2%), Hitsin Habascus (6.2%), Kalssi (5.2%), Musta Pupu (7.2%) and Brown Ale (6.3%). An autumn 2014 special was Ruuhio Ale, flavoured with juice from rowan berries gathered in the forests of Hirvensalo in Turku. Brewing paused at times and restarted in the 2010s. Uusi Apteekki's regulars have included author Reijo Mäki and professor Esko Valtaoja, and the restaurant has repeatedly appeared as a setting in Mäki's Vares novels.

History

The site on the slope of Kaskenmäki in Turku has historical significance dating back to the early 14th century, when the Turku St. Olaf monastery stood on what is now Kaskenkatu and its surrounding plots. In 1907 pharmacist Frans Eskil Ditzler moved the then Turun Uusi Apteekki (Turku New Pharmacy) to its current location in a Jugendstil building completed that year. The building and the pharmacy's furnishings were designed by architect Frithiof Strandell, with the entire beautiful interior made as a custom commission for the pharmacy. On 27 January 1993, a Seurusteluravintola (social restaurant) named Kaskenkatu 1 opened in the former pharmacy premises; it became better known among beer enthusiasts as Uusi Apteekki. The old Turun Uusi Apteekki interior was preserved unchanged in the newly founded Uusi Apteekki. In 2015, a jury appointed by the Helsinki Beer Festival selected Uusi Apteekki as Beer Restaurant of the Year. Within the same premises, Kaskenmäen Panimo operated as Finland's first private brewpub, starting in spring 1993. Its British-style bitter, Vanhan Luostarin Kellariolut, was completed for sale at Uusi Apteekki on 22 July 1993. Brewing was mainly done from autumn to spring. The latest products included Kaski-Portteri (7.2%), Hitsin Habascus (6.2%), Kalssi (5.2%), Musta Pupu (7.2%) and Brown Ale (6.3%). An autumn 2014 special was Ruuhio Ale, flavoured with juice from rowan berries collected in the forests of Hirvensalo in Turku. Brewing operations paused at times and restarted in the 2010s. Uusi Apteekki's best-known regular customers have included author Reijo Mäki and professor Esko Valtaoja. The restaurant has also appeared repeatedly as a setting in Reijo Mäki's Vares books.
