Overview
Utia de Ncisles, also known as Rifugio Firenze in Cisles and Regensburger Hütte, is a mountain hut located on the Cislesalm in Val Gardena, within the South Tyrolean Dolomites of Italy. Situated in the Puez-Geisler Nature Park, it serves as a base for hikers and climbers exploring the Geisler and Puez groups. The hut is reachable only on foot, with access via several trails from Selva Gardena, Santa Cristina, Ortisei, and Passo Gardena. It offers traditional local cuisine, including options for vegetarians, vegans, and gluten-intolerant guests, and provides overnight accommodation with mandatory reservation. The building is owned by the Autonomous Province of South Tyrol and operated under a concession. Its multilingual names reflect its complex history: the German name honors its builders, the Regensburg section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club; the Italian name references the Florence section of the Italian Alpine Club, which ran it after World War I; and the Ladin name reflects local usage.
History
The hut was built in 1888/89 by the Regensburg section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club (DuOeAV), making it the first Alpine Club hut in Val Gardena. It was planned by architect Max Schultze, a senior building official for the Princely Thurn und Taxis, who also covered the construction costs because the Regensburg section lacked the funds. In 1906, the builder and owner handed the hut over to the section. After World War I, it was confiscated by Italy in 1921. As a result, the Regensburg section built the New Regensburg Hut in the Stubai Alps in 1930. The old Regensburg Hut eventually passed to the Florence section of the Italian Alpine Club (CAI), which operated it under the new name Rifugio Firenze. The hut was last renovated and expanded in 1980. Together with 24 other huts expropriated by the state, it became the property of the South Tyrol provincial administration in 1999; the CAI's concession to manage it expired at the end of 2010. Since 2015, the province has been assisted in managing the hut (leasing to tenants, monitoring operations, renovation measures) by a parity commission that includes the Alpine Association of South Tyrol (AVS) and the CAI alongside public authorities.
