History
UPS traces its origins to 1907, when two teenage entrepreneurs, Claude Ryan and Jim Casey, started the American Messenger Company in a Seattle basement with a $100 loan. In 1919 the company expanded beyond Seattle to Oakland, California, where the United Parcel Service name debuted, and that same year it painted its cars its signature brown colour. In 1930 UPS expanded to the East Coast in metropolitan New York City, moving its corporate office from Los Angeles to 331 East 38th Street, New York City. In 1953 UPS began common carrier operations, serving commercial and residential shippers in some cities including Chicago, and reintroduced air service offering two-day delivery to major East and West Coast cities. In 1975 UPS became the first package delivery company to serve every address in the continental United States.
