Unverferth opened L.G. Unverferth Manufacturing with a loan from family members using their war bonds, initially manufacturing combine shucker control levers. It later incorporated as Unverferth Mfg. Co., Inc. and is based at its present-day location in Kalida, Ohio. Its product lines include agricultural wheels, grain handling equipment under the Brent brand, fertilizer application equipment under the Blu-Jet brand, and tillage equipment.

History

In 1935, father-and-son duo Lawrence G. and Richard Unverferth refined and tested a mechanical beet-thinning tool called the Beet Blocker for the family farm, and a patent issued for the product that same year. In 1948, Richard, teamed with his father Lawrence, opened L.G. Unverferth Manufacturing with a loan from family members using their war bonds, beginning by manufacturing combine shucker control levers. In 1949, the duo introduced bolt-on, stovepipe hat-shaped wheel extensions for adding dual wheels to tractors. During the 1950s, the company began manufacturing dual wheels from the family's farm, firmly establishing Unverferth in the agricultural wheel business. In 1962, a patent issued for the mounting of dual agricultural wheels. In 1964, construction of a new manufacturing facility and corporate offices was completed at the present-day location in Kalida, Ohio; the company incorporated as Unverferth Mfg. Co., Inc. and introduced Turn-Rite running gears. In 1965, the company purchased Hammer and Gump, a nearby competitor of dual agricultural wheels, and a patent issued for snap-on-style dual agricultural wheels. In 1967, step-up lugs were introduced to allow farmers to go from 34-inch rims to 38-inch rims economically, with a patent issuing in 1970. In 1968, the T-Rail dual wheel system was introduced for easy on and easy off dual wheel mounting, with a patent issuing in 1971. In 1969, Over-The-Rim dual wheels launched another mounting style to the marketplace. In 1972, the acquisition of McCurdy Manufacturing in Ada, Ohio, added gravity boxes and box augers.
