Overview

The Faculty of Transport and Communications of the University of Belgrade (Serbian: Саобраћајни факултет Универзитета у Београду) is one of the 31 faculties that make up the University of Belgrade, and it is dedicated to education and research across the whole field of transport and traffic. It was founded on 13 September 1950, making it one of the older engineering faculties within the university system. Its teaching and scientific work covers road, rail, inland waterway, maritime, air and pipeline transport, as well as logistics, postal services and telecommunications. The faculty's core activity is educational and scientific work in all areas of traffic and transport. It trains graduate engineers for railway, pipeline, land (including urban public) transport, river, sea and air transport, logistics, mail delivery and telecommunications. Courses address transport technology, planning, technological design, organisation, operation, safety, management, maintenance and economics. Studies last five years: the first two years provide general engineering subjects common to all engineers, while years three to five are devoted to specialised profiles, ending with a final qualification thesis in the tenth semester. The faculty employs 215 people, of whom 73 are teaching staff, 55 are assistants and 16 are professional workers. The teaching building is located at Vojvode Stepe 305, a large structure in the Trošarina area of the Belgrade municipality of Voždovac, with a floor area of 13,800 square metres. The faculty is organised into 24 departments (chairs), spanning water transport, road safety, transport equipment, traffic and transport terminals, technical operation of motor vehicles, road and urban transport, logistics, railway management and operation, postal services and networks, telecommunication services and networks, airports and aviation safety, aircraft operation, air navigation, social sciences and foreign languages, urban planning and transport, technical sciences, route optimisation, general and applied mathematics, texts, railway activity management, and flow theory and capacity. As a constituent faculty of the University of Belgrade, it is a state higher-education institution rather than a commercial company, but it operates a distinct institutional brand with its own identity, website and academic offerings. Its graduates supply the transport, logistics and telecommunications sectors in Serbia and the wider region, and its research supports planning and policy in those fields.

History

The Faculty of Transport and Communications of the University of Belgrade was founded on 13 September 1950. It is one of the 31 faculties of the University of Belgrade and was established to prepare specialists in the field of transport and road traffic. Over the decades it developed into the country's principal academic centre for transport engineering, expanding its teaching and research from an initial focus on traffic and transport into a broad portfolio that today includes railway, pipeline, land (including urban public), river, sea and air transport, as well as logistics, postal services and telecommunications. The faculty's educational model has been a five-year programme. The first two years are devoted to general engineering disciplines shared by all engineers, while the third through fifth years are dedicated to specialised profiles, culminating in the defence of a final qualification thesis in the tenth semester. This structure has allowed the faculty to combine a broad engineering foundation with deep specialisation across the transport modes. Institutionally, the faculty is organised into 24 departments (chairs) that cover its teaching and research fields. These include general departments for water transport, road safety, road and urban transport, logistics, railway management and railway operation, as well as departments for transport equipment, traffic and transport terminals, technical operation of motor vehicles, postal services and networks, telecommunication services and networks, airports and aviation safety, aircraft operation, air navigation, social sciences and foreign languages, urban planning and transport, technical sciences, route optimisation, general and applied mathematics, texts, railway activity management, and flow theory and capacity. The faculty operates from a large teaching building at Vojvode Stepe 305 in the Trošarina area of the Belgrade municipality of Voždovac. The building has a floor area of 13,800 square metres. The faculty employs 215 people, including 73 teaching staff, 55 assistants and 16 professional workers. As a constituent faculty of the University of Belgrade, it is a state higher-education institution, and its official website is at sf.bg.ac.rs.
