Overview

University Health Network (UHN) is a public research and teaching hospital network based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto as a member of the Toronto Academic Health Science Network (TAHSN) and is described as the largest singular health research organization in Canada, ranking first in the country for total research funding. The network brings together several major institutions: Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, West Park Healthcare Centre, the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, and The Michener Institute, a post-secondary institution granting diplomas and certificates in health sciences and leadership. UHN's clinical scale is substantial. In the 2019-2020 fiscal year, its three acute care hospitals recorded more than 39,000 acute inpatient stays and close to 121,000 emergency department visits. The network has also earned international recognition: Newsweek has consistently named UHN's Toronto General Hospital among the world's top hospitals, most recently ranking Toronto General as the world's second-best hospital in 2026 and first in Canada. Research Infosource named it Canada's top research hospital from 2015 to 2022. As a brand, UHN represents an integrated academic health sciences centre rather than a conventional consumer or commercial product brand. Its identity is built on the combination of acute care, rehabilitation, cancer care, education, and research under a single governance and brand umbrella. The organization operates as a public entity, funded through the provincial health system and research grants, and serves patients primarily in Toronto and the surrounding region while attracting patients and research collaborations nationally and internationally. UHN's brand positioning emphasizes world-class research-intensive care, teaching excellence through its University of Toronto affiliation, and integrated patient journeys that span acute, rehabilitation, and community care settings.

History

University Health Network (UHN) was formed through a series of mergers spanning several decades. In 1986, Toronto Western Hospital and Toronto General Hospital merged to create the Toronto Hospital. In 1998, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre joined the organization, and in 1999 the resulting institution was renamed University Health Network. The Toronto Rehabilitation Institute joined in 2011, adding rehabilitation services that help patients transition out of acute care. All four hospitals are affiliated with the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto and serve as teaching hospitals for resident physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professions. In 2016, The Michener Institute was integrated into UHN; established in 1958, it was the first non-medical unit to join the network. On 1 April 2024, West Park Healthcare Centre joined UHN, further expanding the network's continuum of care.
